Are you choosing the misery of certainty?

Someone once said that many people "choose the certainty of misery over the misery of uncertainty", meaning that no matter how bad your life is, you will not change because you can't be sure of what that change may bring.

We will often choose the misery we know and experience because we prefer that to the uncertainty of what change may do to us.

Don’t stay locked in the present.

Step out, turn to God and ask Him for help!

Allow His power and presence to come into your life.

The outcome is not guaranteed to be smooth and pain-free, but God will be with you through it.

People often complain about some parts of the teaching of the Bible.

Sometimes it's about sexual ethics, or the belief that God created the world, or the idea that we should follow the Bible's teachings.

But do these people grasp the idea that Christian faith is seeking to know the eternal God? Or are they looking at it as the process of creating God the way we want Him to be?

If we spend our time formulating what we want God to be like and how we think God should act, this is actually humanism, not Christian faith.

We all need to be careful that we are seeking what God has to say and not just becoming theistic humanists.

UK physician Dr John Wyatt has written a book about the last stages of life, called The Final Lap. Wyatt writes this both from the perspective of a doctor and as someone now in his seventies.

Wyatt writes of the movement later in life from independence to dependence on others. He makes the point that we start life as a baby dependent on others and will finish life in the same way.
That seems awful.

Yet Wyatt writes, “For Christians, it’s not a design flaw that we become dependent on others. Human beings are designed to be dependent on others, to be limited and vulnerable”.

This is part of how we were created – to be loved, cared for, and perhaps even dependent.

The parable of the rich fool is often misunderstood. It comes after a man asks Jesus to settle a family dispute over inheritance - a reasonable request for justice that teachers regularly handled.

Jesus doesn't say the request is wrong, but he warns against greed, especially relevant for those of us in wealthy countries. He tells of a man with a massive harvest who tears down his barns to build bigger ones, planning a secure future. The key detail: he decides alone to keep everything for himself, isolated in his wealth.

The twist? Just when he feels most secure, he dies. All that accumulated wealth becomes worthless. Jesus' point: there are bigger issues at stake than money or fair inheritances.
