These words are about a time when there will be those who want to join the eternal kingdom of God, but it’s too late, the door is closed. Those outside will suggest they were part of God's people, yet the reply is that “I don’t know you”.

In this context, there are two other points being made.
One is that the unlikely people, those from distant lands and countries, will enter into the kingdom, as well as those who were considered last will be the first gathered in.

Jesus also has a harsh word that there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. This happens at the point where people recognise they are on the wrong side of this sifting of people.

The challenge today: be sure you have responded to Jesus. Be sure you are part of His kingdom, be sure you know God personally, don’t put that off.

Take time to pray today and know you are right with God.

Many people find reading the Bible challenging. The different types of literature, difficult passages and foreign culture make it hard to understand some passages.

To grasp Christian faith and the Bible, it might help to see it a bit like a stained glass window.
If you have ever looked at a very large stained glass window, they are made up of two basic elements.

Firstly, there are hundreds of small panes with specific details that add up to create the picture. Secondly, when you take a step back and take in the whole picture, you stop being focused on the fine details.

Faith is like this. You can look carefully at what the Bible teaches in specific passages, but then step back and see the big picture of God's revelation in the world. The combination will help you grasp how and what God has communicated to humanity.

The following paragraph was written more than 2000 years ago – before political spin, before jaundiced legacy media, before podcasts, social media, and influencers.

The Psalmist wrote…
“Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race.
Everyone lies to their neighbour; they flatter with their lips but harbour deception in their hearts.”

This could have been written last week, not two millennia ago. It’s both an observation and a challenge.
The observation is that humanity has not changed – our hearts are still the same.

It’s a challenge in a world of spin and self-promotion. Let’s make a commitment to tell the truth and to look out for others.

Lord, help us all be honest, faithful, and consistent.

Most people know that the beginning of the Christian Church was a dark and difficult time. Christians in Rome were fed to lions and burned as human torches in Nero's garden.

At that time, darkness dominated, and it seemed the Church had little chance of a positive future.
Yet the Church did not just survive; it flourished. Only a couple of centuries later, it became the official religion of the Roman Empire.

Darkness was not victorious then and won't be now.

In difficult times, you can feel overwhelmed by the darkness and feel broken by your situation, but remember, light is on its way.

In 2010, the world watched as 33 Chilean miners were trapped underground. It was estimated that their eventual release was watched by a billion people worldwide, all rejoicing in their release from the dreadful circumstances of being trapped underground in darkness with no ability to release themselves.

This story has strong parallels to God's work for humanity through Jesus.

The difference is that when trapped underground, your situation is obvious. You know that there is no way out, and you can't save yourself. Many people today have confidence only in themselves, believing they are free agents with little to fear, but this is in fact blissful ignorance.

Don’t be ignorant of the present darkness - turn to Jesus today.

What is a true display of courage?

In the Old Testament of the Bible, we get a picture of courage from leader and prophet, Daniel.
Daniel was in exile in Babylon. He hears that the king has made a decree that no one can worship any God but him, Darius, and if they did, they would die.

Here is Daniel’s response:
“…. he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day, he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”

This is a great reminder of what courage and conviction look like!
