Yaabubiin - Indigenous commerce

Yaabubiin - Indigenous commerce “Yaabubiin” is the Gumbaynggirr word for “economy” (literally “all things”). Our foundin

Commerce and private enterprise are essential to economic development and genuine self-sufficiency. Indigenous communities will not move from poverty to prosperity unless the conditions necessary for private enterprise and commerce to thrive exist in those communities. A gap exists between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians but increasingly, a gap is developing between remote and urban Indi

genous communities. These gaps can be closed without the need for indefinite handouts but through the normal progression to full commercial participation. Unlocking Indigenous communities to real and sustainable development and bringing all Indigenous people into full participation in commerce will benefit the entire Australian economy.

Vale The Honourable Ted Egan AO

I am deeply saddened to learn today of the death of The Honourable Ted Egan AO — a man whose life’s work shaped the Northern Territory and whose spirit will remain woven into its story forever.

Ted was a true Territorian. He gave his heart to this place and its people, from the bush communities he lived in and sang about to the halls of public service, where he carried himself with humility, strength and unwavering commitment to the NT. His music, his stories and his advocacy captured the character of the Territory in a way few others ever could.

For decades, Ted worked to bridge cultures, share history with honesty and celebrate the resilience and richness of our communities. He did so with generosity, humour and a deep respect for the people who call this land home. His legacy will continue to guide us, and his contribution will never be forgotten.

My thoughts are with his beloved wife Nerys, his family, his friends and all Territorians who feel this loss. We honour Ted for his extraordinary service, his cultural leadership and the warmth he brought to every corner of the NT.

The Territory is better for having had him. May he rest in peace.
