Did you know that most videos are 20-40% B-roll footage?

B-roll is the "in-between" footage that serves a range of important purposes.

It could be drone footage or a wide shot of scenery to show where you are. 🏔️

It could be a close-up of someone's eyes to show emotion, or their hands to show them working. 👀

It's also used for creating mood, or setting the pace with cutaways and transitions. ✂️

It's NOT a shot of your characters talking and it DOESN'T drive the narrative.

Instead, it's all about perfecting pace, clarifying context and evoking emotion 🎭

(You can also use it to cover up a whoopsie by your actor, but you didn't hear that from us 😉)

🌳 Location scouting 101 🌳

Here are three things to keep in mind when you're on the hunt for the perfect location to shoot.

1️⃣ Be mindful of sounds
You could find the perfect grassy field to film on, but if there's a busy highway behind you, it could seriously mess with your audio. You might have to film without audio, or with specific equipment to compensate.

2️⃣ It has to be legal
Sadly, most of the great locations in the world, particularly indoor ones, are privately owned. Trespassing, even in the name of art, isn't cool. If you can't get permission to film, you'll have to go with option B.

3️⃣ Consider landmarks carefully
When filming in cities, you might capture recognisable landmarks in the background. That can be fine if you want your audience to know where you are, but it can be distracting if it's not on purpose.

This year, we've had the great pleasure of working with St Andrews Cathedral School to create a series of videos for their "Life Giving Learning" campaign.

For these videos, we enjoyed focusing on the stories of students to show how the school teachers nurtured their students to achieve their goals, enjoy their passions, and connect with culture 🎵🏀🏕️

From the city to the mountains, classrooms to fields to cathedrals, day and night, we filmed it all to bring this amazing project to life.
