We’re thrilled to be bringing you the 3 Dec show at The Vanguard. As always, there’ll be 3 outstanding short stories read by talented performers. Cabaret style seating. Arrive at 6, grab a table, share a drink with friends. Show starts at 7pm.

We’re thrilled to announce StorySALOON Ltd’s inaugural board!

StorySALOON began with a big idea: to create a living, growing archive of contemporary Australian short stories—brought to life by talented actors, recorded for podcast, and shared now and into the future.

We’re voluntary. We’re NFP. We’re Aus arts through and through. 📚🏳️‍🌈 🌏 🖤💛❤️

Please welcome our wonderful, brave board.
🔹 Jane Messer has worked in publishing, academia and with peak literary organisations for over three decades. She founded StorySALOON in 2024, launching its first season in 2025. She is the host of the live show and podcast.
🔹 Dr Sharmila Jayasinghe brings extensive board experience in the not-for-profit sector to StorySALOON Ltd, having served with organisations including The Sri Lankan Association of NSW, Hills Women's Shed and the Lisa Harnum Foundation.
🔹 Rachael Adamson is a creative producer from Western Sydney with a love of witty comedy, bold theatricality and work that leads with heart. She currently produces at Hayes Theatre Co.
🔹 Sue Fagan brings a wealth of experience in marketing, communications and the contemporary arts to StorySALOON. With a diverse international career spanning media, marketing and communications, she is passionate about supporting artists and connecting them with audiences to strengthen Australia's cultural landscape.
🔹 Martin Searle has extensive executive experience managing significant resources and leading organisational development across diverse Australian sectors; along with expertise in business process improvement, recruitment and development, and commercial management in professional services.

Anne Casey-Hardy shares her new writing space in her venerable old bluestone cottage.

She told us that ‘The novel I have been working on for the past few years is set in Williamstown, Victoria in the 1860s, and this house was built in 1856. When it came up for sale I couldn’t resist, though it needed so much repair.’ We think the move is a great success! Anne's short story ‘In Disguise, Lying Low’ featured in our last season.

2026 ABR Elizabeth Jolley Prize Short Story Prize winner announced!

Australian Book Review (ABR) has announced that writer Laura Elvery has won the 2026 ABR Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize for her short story ‘C.Q.D.’. Judges Delia Falconer, Jonathan Ricketson, and Beejay Silcox chose the short story from a field of 1000+ entries from 32 countries. In the judges' words, "The winning story is a conversation starter. Not only the kind of story that gets people talking (and there is so much to talk about), but one that enters into lively conversation with pop history and pop culture."

This is the 16th year the Jolley Prize has run and it is one of the world’s leading prizes for short fiction, with prize money worth a total of $12,500. The winning stories by Laura Elvery (1st, Aus), Sam Keenan (2nd, NZ) and Ursula Brunetti (3rd UK/France) are published in the August 2026 issue (No. 489) of the ABR. Highly Commended, ‘Connie’ by Belinda Castles will be published in the September issue.

📜The shortlist for the Hilarie Lindsay Prize has been announced by the Society of Women Writers (NSW).

Named in honour of Hilarie Lindsay MBE OAM (1922–2021), writer, toy manufacturer, and former president of the Society of Women Writers (Australia), the prize celebrates excellence in short story writing.

This month, we take a peek at Claire Aman’s writing desk and learn that when she’s on her motorcycle riding along NSW regional roads, she’s also writing.

“Sitting at the dining room table among the sauce bottles is where I type the words I’ve been thinking about. The real writing space is when I’m on the open road for hours at a time. My hands and feet are occupied and that somehow lets my thoughts condense without interruptions. It’s where stories form. Or sometimes I spend miles looking for one word that conveys it all. And while that’s happening my other brain watches the road!"

🏆 A writing opportunity for the young storytellers in your life.

WriteOn is an annual creative writing competition held in association with the State Library of NSW. Students are invited to write an imaginative text of up to 500 words, using a provided stimulus.

The stimulus for WriteOn 2026 is the quote:
"It was a small thing, but it made a difference."

The competition is open to students in Years 1 to 6 across NSW, including those registered for home schooling.

Entries close: Friday 19 June 2026.
