Seventeen years ago, two high school friends quietly crafted the first 13 songs they’d ever make. That collection became 'The Grey Space', a debut album that introduced Horrorshow to the world and featured fan favs like No Rides Left, All Summer Long and Waiting for the 5.04.
While most crews were out playing gigs and getting their name out, Solo and Adit kept it low-key. They shared tracks only with close friends, their One Day family, Fame, who opened the doors of the literal bank vault in his studio The Bank where the album was recorded and spoken word poet Jo Seto, who pops up on the secret track and gave Solo the copy of A Clockwork Orange that inspired the group’s name. Adit’s mix of soulful, sample-based production and intricate live instrumentation was the canvas for Solo’s introspective lyricism and vivid imagery that resonated deeply with fans.
When Nick Lupi from Spit Syndicate mentioned them to Urthboy, Solo turned up at the Elefant Mansion in Enmore. “I can still vividly remember being nervous as hell knocking on the door and passing a burnt CD-R copy of the album through the security grill into the hands of Urthboy, who I had only met once or twice before,” he says.
What started as a meeting for feedback turned into an offer to release the album on Elefant Traks. They’d thought about putting it out themselves and had even had interest from other labels, but they’d always admired ET and felt like their values lined up. It just made sense.
For a lot of people around the country, The Grey Space was their first glimpse into the inner-west of Sydney, Horrorshow’s beloved home.
The album was launched at a sold out Annandale hotel with a full live band and a secret guest support slot revealed on the night from Urthy himself.
This was the beginning of a 17 year working relationship that spanned 6 albums and countless tours of their own that saw the inner west duo grow into one of the label’s most loved acts.
Turn it up loud and bump The Grey Space today!
