Unlike Western big cities with an on-the-go coffee culture, the Ethiopian coffee ceremony is less about haste and more about hospitality and communion.

Apparently, ‘rare’ applies to both the coffee and the barista’s financial security.

For Standart Issue 44, we asked Anton Gudim, the artist behind YES , BUT comics, to illustrate rarely-talked-about coffee moments. We’ve turned them into original illustrations throughout the issue, plus a gift for all our readers: a sticker sheet.

Become a member and get yours. Your copy of Issue 44 will also come with a specialty coffee sample. This time, it’s a washed Kenyan SL28/SL34 tasting of red currant, yuzu, strawberry, and mango. Roasted by Ordinary. Free global shipping included.

Pacamara doesn’t do easy. One of coffee’s most temperamental hybrids, it’s a genetic gamble — bred to combine two parent varieties’ best traits, but just as likely to inherit their instability instead. The result is a cup that can swing from floral and electric to downright unpredictable, batch to batch, farm to farm.

Producers spend decades chasing its ceiling, and that’s exactly why it’s worth chasing back. Read more in ‘¿Pero por qué Pacamara?’, written by Rafael Sans (Rafael Sans) and published in our newest edition, Standart Issue 44.

Two reasons to subscribe today (as if you needed more):
- Coffee sample from Ordinary, a washed SL28/SL34 from Kamoini Factory tasting of red currant, yuzu, strawberry, and mango.
- An exclusive coffee-coded stickers by Antоn Gudim, the artist behind YES , BUT—made only for Standart readers.

Behind every “what do you taste?” is a whole world of clutter, character, and caffeine-fuelled chaos, funky interiors, mismatched figurines guarding the espresso machine, and a workspace that looks more like a collector’s den than a coffee bar.

For Standart Issue 44, we show you Prague’s specialty scene up close with Ondřej Štokl, part sommelier, part technician, part confidant, and the head of coffee for a 30-venue restaurant group.

This issue ships with a coffee sample from Ordinary (a washed SL28/SL34 from Kamoini Factory, all red currant, yuzu, strawberry, and mango) and an exclusive coffee-twist illustration from Anton Gudim (Antоn Gudim) of YES , BUT fame — made just for our readers.

Free global shipping is also included—but stock is limited. See link in bio before it’s gone.

Specialty coffee conquered Prague years ago; keeping it conquered is Ondřej Štokl’s job. Part sommelier, part technician, part confidant, the head of coffee for a 30-venue restaurant group crisscrosses the city by tram, asking one question at every bar: What do you taste?

In Standart Issue 44, we spent a day in his slipstream and discovered a profession you didn’t know existed. Read more in print.

Subscribe today and you’ll also get a coffee sample from Ordinary (Kamoini Factory washed SL28/SL34 with tasting notes of red currant, yuzu, strawberry, mango) + an exclusive YES , BUT x Standart sticker sheet, made only for our members.

Yeshu Tsegaye is quick to laugh, and quicker to make you laugh. We met her in the cupping lab at , the Addis Ababa-based company where she is head of sustainability, and brewed one of the first naturals of the fresh Guji crop (strawberries, hibiscus, deliciousness). Bette Buna grows, processes, and exports coffee from Sidama and Guji, but it was founded on an idea carried over from social work: that coffee can be a vehicle for changing lives.

Over coffee, we talked about money and superstition, aid and independence, and the dream she is still working towards. Read more in Standart Issue 44.

Learn more about this fickle, unforgiving, and completely mesmerising varietal in ‘¿Pero por qué Pacamara?’, written by Rafael Sans (Rafael Sans) and published in our newest edition, Standart Issue 44.
