Australian Church Record

Australian Church Record The Church Record was first published in Sydney in 1880.

The Australian Church Record is an evangelical newspaper in the Reformed Anglican tradition of the historic creeds and the 39 Articles of Faith, and the standard of teaching and practice in the Book of Common Prayer. We accept the Scriptures as God’s word written, and as containing all things necessary for salvation and the final authority in all matters of faith and behaviour.

When prayer becomes unlawful, will we still pray?
When obedience to God costs us, will we still obey?

The call is the same today as it was for Daniel: “He prayed, just as he had done before.”

A stirring challenge from Andrew Barry, published in the ACR’s Synod 2025 Journal.

Australian Christians face increasing challenges in balancing our obligations to civil authority and God’s word. The question of when to obey God rather than government has become one of the most significant issues confronting the modern church. What the government does is one thing; how the churc...

Rome urged Christians to mark 1700 years since Nicaea as a sign of unity. But a new book from Matthias Media shows that real unity is impossible while Protestants and Catholics read the Creed so differently—especially on Scripture, Christ, Mary, and salvation. Read Robert Doyle’s review of this insightful study.

The Nicene Creed: The nature of Christian unity and the meaning of gospel words is a carefully written, informed, and thoughtful examination of basic Roman Catholic beliefs following the implicit and explicit trajectory laid out in the Nicene Creed: the doctrines of the authority of Scripture, Trini...

Should we reject or reframe Halloween? Andy Bryan’s article offers wise, practical help for families—and a useful resource for ministers to share this season.

Why discuss this topic? As Halloween grows in popularity, it’s worth helping our children think about how to be in the world but not of it (John 17:15). This isn’t about everyone reaching the same conclusion, but about thinking theologically and guiding our families wisely. A brief history Hallo...

A bold new chapter begins: Gafcon declares the end of Canterbury’s primacy. Hear from Mark Thompson on this historic moment.

The recent announcement from the Gafcon Primates, The Future Has Arrived (16 October 2025), begins a new era in the long history of the Anglican churches. In 2008 Anglican bishops from all over the world gathered in Jerusalem to support each other in the mission of reaching the world for Christ and....

What started as one mum’s attempt to share homemade gospel resources turned into an Instagram account followed by thousands. Leah shares how her journey through motherhood became an unexpected ministry of encouragement to Christian parents.

The ACR spoke to Leah about her ministry at home and in the online world. Leah, thanks so much for talking with us. Can you tell us a bit about yourself for those who don't know you? Thanks for chatting with me! I’m a mum of four kids aged between 3 and 9. I live in

The ACR is saddened by the news of Dame Sarah Mullally's appointment as Archbishop of Canterbury. This moment reflects a deeper struggle in the Anglican Communion over truth, unity and gospel faithfulness.

Now more than ever, let’s keep praying—for bold preaching, biblical conviction, and a church that lifts high the name of Jesus.

The Australian Church Record (ACR) notes the announcement that Dame Sarah Mullally has been appointed to the office of Archbishop of Canterbury, and as such, the Primate of All England and metropolitan bishop of the Province of Canterbury. The ACR regrets this appointment and laments the way it will...

Hope for the Illawarra was a powerful reminder that God is still at work.

Over one weekend, thousands gathered across youth, kids’, and adults’ events—and more than 1000 people responded to the gospel of Jesus.

Churches united, Christians prayed boldly, and many stepped out in faith to invite others. Even in the face of challenges, God provided—and the good news was proclaimed clearly and faithfully.

Let’s keep praying, keep speaking, and keep trusting that God is drawing people to himself.

In my time in ministry, I have encountered many people who, while acknowledging Jesus’ command to “go and make disciples” feel impossibly ill-equipped, and so are reluctant to do so. In fact, many of these people further claim that they lack any ability whatsoever to evangelise, presuming the ...

📊 Are we holding our churches to a lower standard than our diocesan organisations?

In this powerful and timely piece for Synod 2025, Raj Gupta challenges us to move beyond counting bums on seats and dollars in the plate—and to start measuring what truly matters for gospel growth.

Picture this: Every September, the Synod of the Diocese of Sydney receives detailed annual reports from Anglicare (aged care outcomes, community impact metrics, financial sustainability indicators), Moore College (graduate placement rates, theological competency assessments, student satisfaction sco...

✍ New ACR Journal Alert! ‘Be Careful How You Build’ — Dive into the Synod 2025 edition and explore gospel-centered wisdom for shaping future ministry.

Read the Synod journal here. Dear friends, At Hope Anglican Leppington, we regularly run a program called “Ministry Minds” as we train our young adults for ministry. As part of the program I read 1 Corinthians with them and pause to consider Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 3:10: “Be careful ho...

Ever heard the phrase ‘sheep bite’? It sounds biblical—but Callan Pritchard shows how using it may be doing more harm than we think.

I have often heard church leaders use a phrase like, “sheep bite and kick,” to describe challenges and conflict in church life. In this metaphor “biting” signals hostility and stubbornness. Though it sounds biblical, this phrase troubles me. I want to weigh it against the Bible’s use of pa...

In this compassionate article, Susan An reflects on the heartbreaking reality of dementia, and the unshakable truth that even when we forget, God never does.

“She was a wonderful mother and a devoted wife”, he said, holding her hand. She sadly didn’t meet his gaze but rather looked past him, glassy-eyed and unseeing. As her speech pathologist I was sitting by her bedside, watching her not recognise her husband of 41 years. She was in the final stag...

What does it take to see churches not just survive, but multiply across Australia?

Scott Sanders has spent the past 15 years helping church leaders wrestle with that question. In this interview, he reflects on the origins of Reach Australia, the DNA of church planting, and the shift toward growing healthy, evangelistic churches nationwide.

Hi Scott, thanks so much for speaking with us. Can you tell us a bit about yourself for those who don't know you? Well, I've been married to Natalie for 20 years and we’ve got four girls. I grew up in a Christian family and became a Christian at Ashfield Presbyterian Church when I was
