The Tenterfield Chamber of Tourism, Industry and Business (TCTIB) along with the Tenterfield Tourism Group would like to formally invite you to the official opening of the New Tenterfield Information Centre (TIC) to be held Thursday the 2nd of October from 8am to 10am!

It has been a few years that Tenterfield has been missing a place for visitors and locals alike to obtain information by firendly, smiling volunteers and we are so pleased to recreate that atmosphere once more!

Currently, the Tenterfield Information Centre will be open from Thursday through to Saturday 10am-2pm; and as more volunteers present themselves and more activity becomes apparent we will endevour to grow our opening hours over the months and years to come.

Please RSVP to Michele on 0421 434 201 before the 1st October for catering purposes and for the cutting of the cake!!!!!!

162 years ago 11 September 1863, notorious bushranger Frederick Wordsworth Ward aka "Captain Thunderbolt" and another inmate (Fred Britten) escaped from the supposedly escape-proof Cockatoo Island Goal by swimming to the mainland at Balmain where his girlfriend, Mary-Anne Bugg was waiting. Britten drowned, but Mary was right there on the shore waiting for Fred Ward, along with a fast, white horse right beside where the Dawn Fraser Pool is today. Fred and Mary got away, and galloped off into the sunrise.

The street was named 'White Horse Street' for many years before being shortened to White Street. Fred Ward had a reputation as the "gentleman bushranger" and his lengthy survival, being the longest roaming bushranger in Australian history.
