I came home Monday from a long weekend away playing Golf, fishing and spending quality time with some mates. After unpacking the car and putting a load of washing on I sat down at my computer to prepare this week's show.
Alas my ever faithful Dell refused to boot.
Being fairly knowledgeable regarding the dark science of computer maintenance and repair I set about the onerous task of restoring my desktop to life. But it proved to be a fruitless effort as, even with a new power supply the unit failed to respond,
Fortunately my music library is stored on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) and I have a laptop that I can rely on as a backup solution.
So I am able to bring you my show this Sunday night from 9PM AEST (Daylight Savings ends Sunday morning) right here on
2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

A Cheeto shaped like the beloved Pokémon Charizard has sold at auction for a total cost of $87,840.

The Goldin auction house listed the snack as sold on Sunday.

https://apnews.com/article/pokemon-cheeto-charizard-cheetozard-auction-9619c778aab3d0bb7bd3ed1fbcf5517b

“Presented is a 3-inch long Flamin’ Hot Cheeto in the shape of the Pokémon Charizard, affixed to a customized Pokémon card and encapsulated in a clear card storage box,” the auction’s description states. “It was initially discovered and preserved sometime between 2018-2022 by 1st & Goal Collectibles. The Cheeto surged in popularity on social media platforms in late 2024.”

There were 60 bids on the uniquely shaped snack, according to the listing. The winning bid was $72,000 plus a buyer’s premium.

Since I was never in to Pokemon, or indeed Cheetos, I cannot with all sincerity attest to the similarity of the two items. I can however attest to the fact that you would have to have more money than sense to pay that much for such a stupid thing.

You won't have to bid at aution to join me on Sunday night from 9PM AEDT for a value filled selection of Progressive rock music right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on the web on www.2nvr.org.au

This week Sydney experienced its hottest March overnight
temperature of 25.9C after a day of 40C heat.
Fortunately a cooling "Southerly Buster" came through to partly ameliorate the stifling heat. Meanwhile areas of Victoria experienced heatwaves and bushfires at the same time a Melbourne had rain for the Australia Formula 1 racing in the heart of the city. Gotta love this country!

In other news it looks like the rest of the world (apart from Russia North Korea and Hungary) are ganging up on Trump and his rampant insanity. Tit for Tat tariffs seem to be the flavour of the week alongside protests against Elon Musk and Tesla (or Tesler as Trump calls it) which have resulted in sales plumetting in all markets.
As the old chinese curse goes:
"May you live in interesting times."

Hopefully no protests this week if you join me on Sunday night at 9PM AEDT for some great Progressive Rock music right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

As Tropical Cyclone Alfred slowly wends its way inland as a rain event it only remains to assess the damage inflicted on a huge swathe of the Mid-North Coast, North and Tweed Coast of New South Wales, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sunshine Coast of Queensland.
Beaches along this stretch have been dramatically eroded with the whole length of the famous Gold Coast strip virtually non-existant after the storm surge and waves washed away millions of tonnes of sand.
Riverine systems are slowly returning to minor flood levels as the excess waters from rainfalls of over 1m recede and a peak waves of 12.3m on the Gold Coast slowly abate. Though property damage is expected to be as high as $1 billion only one fatality has been reported.

As supply chains resume we can expect to see toilet paper back on the shelves by the end of the week.

What is not in short supply is great Progressive Rock music. So join me Sunday night from 9PM AEDT right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

At the time of writing this (3.30pm 6 March) Tropical Cyclone Alfred is "parked" off the coast of Southern Queensland, notably Brisbane with the threat of making landfall withing the next few days.
Strong winds are whipping up the sea with waves recorded over 10m and a very high tidal surge expected as the storm moves closer to shore. Large areas of the Southeat Queensland are very low lying and up to 20,000 properties are subject to possible flooding in the coming days. Brisbane airport, which lies only 4m above sea level will close for flights in and out from 4pm today. Many schools in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Northern NSW have closed as well as some supermarkets in areas that may be impacted.
Authorities are advising prople to take all necessary precautions and to not enter flood waters. "Panic purchasing" of toilet paper, bottled water, tarpaulins and torches, as well as groceries has left many stores with nothing on shelves. Authorities are advising people to keep clear of rising waters.

Although I am over 400km away from the "eye of the storm" my area is still experiencing strong winds and heavy rains with the threat of localised flooding.

But nevertheless the show must go on so join me Sunday night from 9PM AEDT for a soothing selection of Progressive Rock music right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

It seems as if we will be having a Federal Election within the next year and our politicians are already slagging off at one another and stealing ideas to claim as their own. The leader of the Libtards seems to have backed off a little on his ridiculous "Nuclear for All" stance and is considering copying a bunch of ideas from the US Republicans.
One such plan is to slash the Public Service, a favourite when conservatives gain power. Then, as in the US currently, they quickly realise that you can't run a Bureaucracy without Bureaucrats.
It is common sense that if the population grows and you want to provide adequate services for them then the Public Service must also grow. At least the Libtards say that they would direct savings from staff cuts towards free visits to Doctors rather than tax cuts for Billionaires. But it is early days so a policy shift or two is always on the cards.

No staff cuts here this week, well not so far, so you can safeky join me on Sunday night from 9PM AEDT for a great selection of Progressive Rock music right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

With the ongoing sh*tfight over Tariffs between Trump and Canada it is interesting to reflect on some of the contibutions to society that Canada has made over the years (many that Americans claim as their own - go figure). Here are a few surprising items:

Peanut Butter:
In 1884 Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Canada patented peanut paste, the finished product from milling roasted peanuts between two heated surfaces.

Paint Roller:
The paint roller was invented by Norman Breakey, a Torontonian

Ironing Board:
A Canadian by the name of John B. Porter invented the first truly portable ironing table. It was a fold-able model with detachable press boards specifically for sleeves.

Electric Wheelchair:
To assist veterans of World War II, Canadian inventor George Klein creates the first electrically powered wheelchair.

Basketball:
Invented by Canadian James Naismith in 1891, while he was teaching at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hockey:
The modern sport of ice hockey was developed in Canada, most notably in Montreal, where the first indoor game was played on March 3, 1875.

Instant Replay:
Instant replay was invented by George Retzlaff in 1955, where it was used to replay a goal during CBC's Hockey Night In Canada.

Whoopee Cushion:
The modern rubber whoopee cushion was invented in the 1930s by the JEM Rubber Co. of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, by employees who were experimenting with scrap.

Insulin:
Insulin was discovered in 1921 by Toronto doctor Frederick Banting and further developed at the University of Toronto by Banting, Charles Best, John Macleod and Bertram Collip.

We at Prog Rock Playlist side with our Canuck compatriots and insympathy vow to present a great selection of Progressive Rock music this coming Sunday night from 9PM AEDT right here on 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on the web on www.2nvr.org.au

There's a new global internet speed record — and it's about six million times faster than Australia's average.

A team at Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) hit 402 terabits per second (tbps), breaking their previous record of 321 tbps, set in 2023.

One terabit is one trillion bits; so the speed the NICT team clocked would equate to 402,000,000 mbps.

At that speed, 12,500 movies could be downloaded in about a second.

"If the average world download speed is, let's say 100 mbps, then our data rate is indeed 4 million times faster than that," Ben Puttnam, NICT chief senior researcher, said. He said it's unlikely a 402 tbps connection would be used in a household. Instead, it would likely sit "in the core of a network"

"So you could think of it as a big data pipe that could connect four million homes each using 100 mbps, for example," he said.

If a 3 mbps connection is needed to stream a movie on Netflix, Puttnam said a 402 tbps connection could support 130 million simultaneous streams. Gamers could also expect a hitch-free virtual reality experience playing games like Baldur's Gate 3 or Call of Duty.

According to Speedtest.net, the global average download speed for fixed broadband internet is 93.93 mbps.

Australia's average internet speed pales in comparison, at about 66 megabits per second (mbps), according to Speedtest.net

By that measure, this new record speed is a few million times faster than what most of us get in our homes in Australia.

At 66.58 mbps, Australia is ranked 82 on SpeedTest's June index of fixed broadband speeds worldwide, behind Oman and Czechia and just above Uzbekistan.

But no matter what your internet speed you can still enjoy a great selection of Progressive Rock music by tuning in on Sunday night from 9PM AEDT to 2NVR 105.9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au

While areas of Australia are still experiencing extreme heatwave conditions others are faced with very different climatic extremes.
The North-East Tropical Coast of Queensland has been inundated with record rainfalls resulting in severe flooding.
In the past seven days the Cardwell Range received 1,697mm, Rollingstone saw 1,693mm and Macknade Sugar Mill 1,562mm.
That's 67", 66" and 61" in the old scale. People have been catching huge Barramundi, by hand, in flooded streams and parks.

Well, this is unusual! Photos taken Thursday show snow on a Florida beach and no snow in the Alaska wilderness.

Historically, Juneau, Alaska, averages 25 inches of snow in January, but it has only had 8.1 inches so far. Pensacola, Florida, received 8.9 inches on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the world’s hottest maximum temperature in the past 24 hours of 47.2C (117F) was recorded at Marree Aero in South Australia as heatwaves roll across most of Australia.

During the recent US Election the "Grifter in Chief" ranted about the cost of groceries (as if he ever personally bought any) and how on Day One he would bring the prices down. The item that drew the most ire for a steep price increase was Eggs, which he assured all his cult followers would come back to their normal price as soon as he entered the Oval Office. (That and ending the war in Ukraine)

Just to put this in contect the Wholesale price of a dozen eggs in New York City last week was $US6.72 ($AUS10.71) while in California the price was $US8.97 (AUS14.30)

In Australia the price of a dozen eggs is about $6-7

The main reason for the steep increase is not the former administration but the spread of Avian (Bird) Flu has resulted in
more than 20 million egg-laying chickens in the U.S. dying last quarter, data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows, marking the worst toll inflicted on America’s egg supply since the outbreak began.

The record number of chicken deaths, which includes those birds culled when infection is discovered in a flock, come as figures show egg prices have soared to the highest they have been in years, driven in large part by the virus.

Over 100,00 ducks have also needed to be culled. Fortunately the Thanksgiving and Christmas demand for Turkeys was met.

Breakfast may never be the same again but Prog Rock Playlist will lay down more good music this Sunday night from 9PM AEDT right here on 2NVR 105,9FM and streaming on www.2nvr.org.au
