Dewi Sri is not your usual goddess of grain and harvest. Born as a gift to the King of the Gods, her beauty becomes seen as a liability. Dewi Sri embraces her own power to transcend her trauma and transform her physical body into a bounty of earthly treasures for mankind. Her greatest of these will be the padi, or rice plant.

Nunbarshegunu Is the Sumerian Goddess of Grain and Harvests. As writing emerged during Sumerian times, the accounts that needed to be kept to track the storage and trade of grains saw her evolve into Nisaba, the Goddess of Scribes and Writing. Another connection was the use of a reed or stem from grain used as a stylus to mark the clay tablets and create the cuneiform symbols. Many writings from this time finish with the phrase “Praise be to Nisaba”

Julunggur is the Indigenous Australian Goddess known as the Rainbow Serpent. Julunggur is a powerful creator goddess, who carved the rivers and valleys of the land, then called forth the people to populate the land. The Rainbow Serpent watches over the waters and can summon rains, as well as withhold them and create drought. The Goddess helps boys transition to manhood, by swallowing them as children and then regurgitating them as men.

Gula is the Mesopotamian Goddess of Medicine and Healing. As patroness of healers and physicians, she grants restoration to mind, body and soul. Gula is said to have created the tools used in healing and the scalpel is often depicted with her. The dog is also one of her symbols, as these animals were associated with recuperation. Another of her stories gives Gula credit for restoring life after the Great Flood of Babylon.

Dalikamata is the Visayan Diwata of Eye Health. She was worshipped by the indigenous people of the Phillipines to protect and heal any ailments of their eyes. Dalikamata is depicted as having one thousands eyes all over her body. All these eyes give her the power to be able to see the past, present and future. It was believed the morning dew were her tears that were shed during the night after watching the suffering and ill deeds of her people. The Babaylans (ancient priestesses) would collect the dew to make salves and potions. Dalikamata is also connected to owls and eagles, both with powerful sight, and who helped the goddess with her work. When the Spanish invaded the Philipines they forced Christianity upon the population and persecuted the Babaylans. Dalikamata was replaced with Saint Lucia, the patroness of the blind.

Kiputyttö is the Finnish Goddess of Pain and Suffering. While she is seen as the cause of illness and hardship, she is also prayed to, so as to be relieved of them same. It is said she will sing you to your death and relief, then guide you to the underworld. Kiputyttö’s name translates to “Pain Girl” and she lives upon Pain Mountain where she collects illnesses in the form of rocks, ready to pass them onto the world below. Kiputyttö is mostly depicted as crone with dark, pockmarked skin but can also be a young woman with the same afflictions.

Eir is the Nordic Goddess of Healing. As one of the Valkyries she was called upon after battles to heal the warriors, and famously healed the God Baldr. Eir’s skills are also summoned during childbirth by midwives.

Ame-no-Uzume is the Shinto Goddess of the Dawn, Mirth and Revelry. Her energies align with the spontaneity of nature and creativity. When the Sun Goddess Amaterasu suffers such deep grief that she hides herself away in cave, it is Ame-no-Uzume who draws her out. Standing upon a platform she dances with such joy and abandonment that her gown opens and falls away. This delights the other gods and goddesses that are gathered so much that they cry out with laughter and urge her on. The noise is so great that Amaterasu comes out to see what is happening, restoring her light to the world.

Ananke is the Greek Goddess of Necessity, Compulsion and Inevitability. She was born at the dawn of creation alongside her partner, Chronos, the God of Time. Together they break open the primordial Egg of Creation, releasing the heavens, earth and oceans. They then reached out to embrace the cosmos and drive the movement of the heavens and drive forward time.
Ananke is believed to be the mother of The Morai, also known as The Fates, who oversee the destiny of mortals.

Etügen Eke is the Earth Mother Goddess of Tengrism. Her energies watched over the natural world and as such she was prayed to as crops were planted, and once again at harvest time. Etügen Eke was considered perpetually virginal and benevolent, though could enact punishments when ordered by Tengri, the supreme god of Tengrism.

Dewi Sri is the Indonesian Goddess of Rice. Born as a princess, she is murdered by the gods when her beauty becomes a temptation for her step-father, the King. When her body is buried, from the grave grows an abundance of plants, including the padi or rice plant, which emerges from her belly. Reborn as a goddess, Dewi Sri teaches women the magic of taking one grain of rice and letting it multiply into many as it cooks. She gave them one rule- that no man should ever cook rice nor even touch the pot or utensils. When an egotistical King decides he is above this law and tries to cook the rice, Dewi Sri takes away this magic forever.
