Announcing Subespai - Saints 🌹
Available December 5

After living for many years in Australia, Subespai’s Mauri Edo returned home to Spain in 2022. Much changed for him in the interim - time ticks on, as it always does, and reverse culture shock can be both a blessing and a curse. Back in Spain, he returned to music-making after a long hiatus, and in tandem with his new perspective on an old place, he began exploring field recordings of local festivities in his new home in Alaior, Menorca.

Each longform track on Saints is built around a recording of a traditional tune associated with the festivals of St. Lawrence and St. Anthony. These recordings serve as a pretext to weave layered soundscapes - where drones and field recordings intermingle - to evoke emotional resonance and drift through memory and place. The tracks capture a snapshot of Edo’s personal state of mind during their creation: themes of loneliness and isolation, seasonality, and a renewed connection with the art world all echo through this work, alongside his ongoing reflections on existence, society, and the self.

Oxtail Recordings beach trip incoming!
Oct 19 at Frank’s Wild Years 🌊

Join us for an afternoon of sun-soaked and salt-sprayed ambience at the legendary with Oxtail head Mike Nigro and Jordan Ireland.

Mike Nigro is an electronic musician and label operator currently based on Gadigal land. His solo practice and collaborations draw inspiration from the minimalists, early synthesizer pioneers, and contemporary electronic underground. His latest releases Leaving/Returning and Low Light both feature his signature blend of rippling arpeggios, cloud-soft chords, and self-schooled sound design with a tonal sensibility indebted to the 70s kosmische canon.

Jordan Ireland is a multi-instrumentalist songwriter and composer residing on Dharawal land in the Illawarra. He leads the experimental chamber pop collective Purple Orchestra as well as the heart to heart bedroom project, Stolen Violin and is a former member of far north Queensland folk collective The Middle East. He makes empathetic music across a diverse range of genres and mediums. His latest record, Spirit Walking, is a collection of instrumental piano motifs.

Ariadne Randall performs her first US solo show since relocating from NYC to Vienna in 2020. Her latest album “Her Water Dream / Image of a Blue Thumbs-Up” on Oxtail Recordings explores the tension inherent in being the q***r child of “a traveling apocalyptic evangelist and a Gospel singer who roamed America’s Bible Belt” via improvisations on modular synthesizer, laptop, and voice, and received praise from SPIN, Struma+Iodine, and Metal Magazine.

Oxtail 2024 In Review: MF Clarke - Arrays 🌐

Melissa F. Clarke (MF Clarke)’s debut sound publication Arrays combines work spanning many facets of her experimental sonic lexicon and generative trajectory: geophysical data sets, resonant glass instrumentation, field recordings and moret. A listening journey through different threads, components, data sets, sounds and spaces, Arrays brings listeners into what Clarke describes as “a walk thru spaces of data + life.”

Visuals from derived from the same data sets accompanied “confluence (intro)” and “citites 4”, and the album was featured by The Wire and A Closer Listen.

Oxtail 2024 In Review: Mike Nigro - Leaving/Returning 🔁

Oxtail label head Mike Nigro’s Leaving/Returning is a soundtrack to going somewhere but being nowhere: continuous music inspired by the frictionless spaces of airport lounges, hotel lobbies and public transit.

Composed on airplanes, in airports, and at home in between flights during a period of extensive international travel, it’s the sound of staring out the window, having your mind in two places at once, never knowing if you’re coming or going. It’s circular, repetitive, chiastic music that expresses the longing to return when you can never go home, in both form and feeling.

In keeping with the restless and in-transit theme, Nigro toured Australia, US, UK, and Europe to promote the release and celebrate 10 years of Oxtail.

Oxtail 2024 In Review: Ariadne Randall - Her Water Dream/Image of a Blue Thumbs-Up

Arguably the most ambitious Oxtail release to date, Ariadne Randall’s double EP is immense and immersive debut. The music explores the tension inherent in being the q***r child of “a traveling apocalyptic evangelist and a Gospel singer who roamed America’s Bible Belt” via improvisations on modular synthesizer, laptop, and voice, while the cassette includes a massive 9- panel fold-out j-card with extensive technical notes, conceptual background, and lyrics.

Featured in SPIN, Struma+Iodine, Metal Magazine, and 15 Questions, Her Water Dream/Image of a Blue Thumbs-Up introduced the world to one of the most ambitious new voices in contemporary electronic music.

Oxtail 2024 In Review: Rhucle - Place 🏙️

Rhucle’s fifth album for Oxtail is as thoughtful and meditative as ever, a high water mark in his nearly 10 year relationship with the label. Place is yet another masterful entry into his catalog, which sees him continuing to distill his already minimalist palette of field recordings, piano, and synthesizer into a singular, refined sound. All roads lead to here; this must be the place.

Kind words from Longform Editions’ First Impressions and Jeff Conklin’s Ambient Audiophile.

Oxtail 2024 In Review: Low Flung - Full Stop 🌱

On the swan song for his Low Flung project, gave in completely to his love of texture and detail, zoning in/out so deeply on the fraying edges of sound.

With praise from Longform Editions’ First Impressions, an FBI Radio feature on Unfurl, a video premiere on Foxy Digitalis, and a special release gig, Full Stop was a high point to start the year on.
