Sally Sutton has created two memorable new characters for Sunshine Books - Big Mess Jess, the bun-addict on four legs, and Jet Pack Jack, the jet-packing boy who always saves the day despite some crash landings along the way.

Sally sat down for a chat with Sunshiner Jude Tabuteau and spilt the beans on writing decodable books, how she invented the characters, her favourite scenes from the books, tips for young readers and lots, lots more. This 26-minute interview is packed with fascinating insights into the mind of a writer and Sally’s trademark wit and enthusiasm are evident throughout. Today, we throw the spotlight on to Big Mess Jess and the bad luck duck - book 4 of four Big Mess Jess books in the Reading Adventures series!

A picnic with all the family. What could be more delightful? A muddy park, a pond full of w**d and buns for lunch - perfect! But the buns have green spots on them and Pip says they have to be fed to the big, brown duck. Not fair, thinks Jess! Jess annoys the big, brown duck so much that it flaps off to find Gran who is happily asleep in her wheelchair under a shady tree on the hill. But when the duck makes a monster quack in Gran’s face, it sets off a train of events that no one could have foreseen.
