MEET THE CHARACTERS

Jet Pack Jack is a boy with a lot of good intentions. He's determined to help everyone around him, one slightly-less-than-graceful jet pack landing at a time. Jack has a heart of gold but his confidence often plummets faster than his jet pack. Jack’s to-do list includes: Stop a runaway bus, save a girl stuck in a fox’s den, help a goat farmer catch his escaping goats (and did I mention that that happens on Mars, bytheway?), and make sure the circus carries on. Can he do it?

Rex is a rat, but not just any rat. Rex is the confident best friend that Jack doesn’t know he needs. He’s a pint-sized powerhouse of positivity. You’ll find him perched on Jack’s shoulder, squeaking words of wisdom, while Jack steers his jet pack around the skies (and sometimes into the wall). This furry co-pilot might have a big ego, but he knows that despite Jack’s dodgy aerial skills, Jack is the true hero.

MEET THE CHARACTERS

Big Mess Jess is a canine calamity with a nose for baked goods (specifically, buns). Jess’s superpower is turning any tidy space into a chaotic mess of overturned chairs and knocked over cups. This big, shaggy dog believes that life is best lived with muddy paws, a wagging tail, and a constant supply of buns. But, despite all the mess, she always pulls furry, four-legged heroic deeds out of the bag.

Pip's official job title is "Dog Owner", but a more accurate one is "Full-Time Chaos Manager and Dog Wrangler". Pip spends a lot of time following the trail of destruction left by Jess. You will find her wearing her dungarees and a big smile, while generally shouting “Jess, no! Stop! Come back!” and other similar phrases. But Pip and Jess are loyal friends, and while Pip may sigh a little bit at times, she secretly wouldn't have it any other way.

AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT

Sally Sutton is a best-selling, award-winning author of picture books and junior fiction series.

Sally wrote the eight titles in our Reading Adventures series, creating the humorous characters Big Mess Jess (and her owner, Pip) and Jet Pack Jack (and his pet rat, Rex).

Sally’s book Roadworks (with Brian Lovelock, Walker Books/Candlewick Press) has sold over half a million copies worldwide. She also writes plays. Other titles over her twenty-year career include Demolition, Construction, Dig Dump Roll, The Cat from Muzzle, Farmer John’s Tractor and the chapter book series Miniwings and Lulu and the Dance Detectives.

Based in Auckland, New Zealand, she is known for her lively language, rambunctious plots and irrepressible humour. This is her first time working with Sunshine Books and she is loving every minute of it!
