They’re eating pigeon grit - a mix of crushed shells, limestone, and minerals. It’s not food itself, but it’s essential for them because:
• Grinds food: Sits in the gizzard and helps break down seeds since pigeons don’t have teeth.
• Minerals: Provides calcium and trace minerals for bones, muscles, and strong eggshells.
• Gut health: Helps keep digestion running smoothly.

Fanciers leave it out free-choice so the birds take what they need.

Those racing pigeons are bathing, not just playing around. It’s a normal and important part of keeping them healthy.

Why they do it:

1. Clean feathers and skin - Bathing removes dust, dirt, loose feathers, and oil buildup. Clean feathers are smoother and more aerodynamic, which actually helps with flight and racing performance.

2. Parasite control - Water helps dislodge mites, lice, and other external parasites. A lot of fanciers even add a bit of apple cider vinegar or pigeon bath salts to the water to make it more effective.

3. Cooling down - Pigeons can’t sweat. On warm days, splashing around helps them lower their body temperature.

4. Preening prep - After a bath, the feathers are easier to preen. Preening spreads oil from the uropygial gland across the feathers, making them waterproof and flexible.

5. Natural behavior - It’s just instinctive. In the wild, pigeons use puddles, shallow streams, or rain for this.

You can tell they’re enjoying it by the wing flapping and splashing. Most fanciers give their birds a bath 1-2 times a week, usually after training or on rest days, and always remove the water after so it doesn’t get dirty.
