Are you ready for 3 days of heatwave conditions across much of the Darling Downs? 🥵🥵

Hot weather impacts young and healthy bodies as well, so it’s important to understand what’s happening in your body when it’s hot and how to protect yourself.

When you sweat more, it’s because your body increases blood flow to the surface of your skin.

Your heart has to work harder to do this and reduces blood flow to your internal organs as a result. You also start to lose fluids from all that sweating, which can affect your kidneys. ☢️

If you don’t take measures to rehydrate and cool down, all of this can result in dehydration and heart and organ failure.

To keep safe and cool, remember to:
💧 drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day at regular intervals
👵 check in on loved ones regularly (especially the elderly and pregnant women)
🏋️‍♀️ avoid heavy exercise during the hottest parts of the day
❄️ seek air conditioning, or stay in a cool environment
🧴 slip, slop, slap, seek and slide if you’re spending time outside.

If you or anyone else shows signs of heat-related illness, call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice, or visit your doctor. If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

For tips on staying safe in the heat, visit www.health.qld.gov.au/heatsafe

Money worries can happen to anyone. Many older people may feel unsure about discussing financial stress. Needing support is not a sign of failure and you have the right to ask for support without judgement. Applying for financial hardship can help you stay in control of your aged care, maintain your wellbeing, and make aged care decisions based on your needs - not your bank balance.

OPAN has created a fact sheet to help you understand your options available if you’re finding it difficult to pay aged care fees.

To view the fact sheet, visit our dedicated New Aged Care Act page: https://opan.org.au/new-aged-care-act/

Congratulations to Emeritus Professor Mary O’Kane AC on being appointed as The University of Queensland’s first female Chancellor!

As an alumna of St Ursula’s College, Toowoomba, Mary embodies the Serviam ethos - “I will serve” - through her distinguished career in science, engineering and higher education leadership. Her journey from the classrooms of St Ursula’s to the Senate of UQ is a powerful reminder of how values instilled in school can shape lives of service and leadership.

We are so proud to see a former St Ursula’s student breaking barriers and inspiring future generations of Ursuline women to lead with courage, wisdom and a commitment to serve.
