Once was my boss and mentor- the Founder of FRIEND (Foundation for Rural Integration and Development)! Congratulations Sashi.
Please imagine a situation where you had a donor willing to donate millions of dollars to help the poor and hungry in Fiji. To get those millions of dollars, all you must do is engage in genuine talanoa about poverty in Fiji and convince them that the donations will not be mismanaged. In one scenario, you have Frank and Aiyaz in their classy suits talking to these donors. In the second, you have the Saintly Sashi Kiran engaging in talanoa with these donors. Who do you think will come across as genuine and accountable, therefore winning the trust of donors?
Some readers may dismiss the above scenario as a hypothetical situation. However, that is not true. I have discussed this very thing with many donors who have millions of dollars already budgeted to donate. However, huge portions go unspent because of ‘issues’ they have with the governance of recipient nations. Donors are not stupid. They get ‘confidential intelligence briefs’ and know if they are dealing with humanitarians or tyrants. Put a real humanitarian such as Kiran in charge, and have all the checks and balances in place, one will find that donations will increase. On the other hand, if characters such as Frank and Aiyaz are in the picture, the opposite will happen. That is why Fiji needs Sashi Kiran in government.
Sashi Kiran is needed because she is the only person who has such a high international humanitarian profile and track record. This makes her capable of authentically attracting the generosity, trust and goodwill of donors. I have spoken to many donors who are hesitant to donate because they do not trust the FF government. Many donate despite the government, not because of it. So basically, yes, donors will donate regardless of who is negotiating because they know Fiji needs donations, but if you have Sashi Kiran in front of them … there will be a whole different level of engagement and generosity.
The Saintly Sashi Kiran is authentic. She does not tell stories of how she alleviated poverty by sitting in an air-conditioned office and administrating. She has been in the trenches. Her former staff at FRIEND love her. That says a lot about a person! When you are no longer someone’s boss, and your former employees still treat you with the same level of respect, affection and miss you. That really speaks volumes. Furthermore, she built FRIEND in a way that she could leave, and the organisation still thrives. That is genuine leadership!
