An antisemitism summit attended by 250 mayors, councillors and local activists had little to do with antisemitism, but was actually an attack on pro-Palestine activism, an Inner West councillor has said.

The Australian Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism, organised by the Israel-linked and US-based Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) in partnership with local Jewish organisations, wrapped up on the Gold Coast last Friday.

Many prominent political figures were in attendance, including Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism Jillian Segal and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles.

The Wallaroos have secured their place in the Women’s Rugby World Cup quarterfinals despite suffering a sobering 47-7 defeat to favourites England in their final pool clash.

Needing to avoid a 76 point loss to stay in the competition, Australia’s superior points differential ensured they finished second in their group, ahead of the United States. They will now face Canada in the early hours of Sunday morning in a sudden-death quarterfinal.

Jermaine Jones has got a long road ahead of him — he is running 34 marathons in 34 days. And there is a personal tragedy that drives him.

The 38-year-old building industry project manager is raising awareness of mental health in memory of his friends, who lost their battle with depression, while also trying to fundraise $50,000 for the Black Dog Institute.

Unforgettable performances marked Sydney’s Major Marathon debut, with Hailemaryam Kiros and Sifan Hassan crossing the finish line first in a historic race.

The prestigious Abbott world marathon majors gained a seventh member this Sunday as the Sydney marathon took over the city.

Over 35,000 participants raced around some of the city’s greatest sites, beginning in North Sydney before running across the Harbour Bridge, around Pyrmont, down to Centennial Park and finishing at the Opera house steps.

As many as 200,000 Australians have gathered across the country to take part in the Nationwide March for Palestine, calling for an end to the war in Gaza.

Although the Albanese government announced it would recognise the state of Palestine earlier in the month, PAG organiser Josh Lees said this action was not enough and Australia should apply sanctions on Israel.

“We’re sick of empty words, empty gestures like statehood recognition, which won’t do anything to stop this genocide,” he told Central News.

“So what we’re calling for is crippling economic sanctions on Israel and an end to the two-way arms trade, because currently our government is still sending weapons to Israel and they’re still buying weapons from Israel to fund their horrible war machine that’s slaughtering people every day.”
