Before Lebanese sweets filled shopfronts across Australia, there was a busy Redfern corner shop where a family of new arrivals taught the nation to love baklawa.

Opened in 1970 by pastry chef Rateb Elmowy and his family, Elmowy & Sons was Australia’s first Lebanese sweet shop.

For 36 years, the family-run business supplied shops and restaurants nationwide, becoming a cultural landmark and a gathering place for communities across Sydney.

Reforms to hate speech, gun laws and the right to protest, in the wake of the Bondi terror attack, could be fast-tracked through the New South Wales Parliament this week as it convenes for an emergency session.

After vowing to “urgently examine additional measures” last week, the government’s Terrorism and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025 includes amendments to make it an offence to publicly display terrorist symbols, such as the ISIS flag, as well as the tightening of gun laws to limit the number of fi****ms that can be possessed by an individual.

It would also give the NSW Police Commissioner the power to ban protests if a terrorist act is declared, a plan that has prompted opposition from a range of politicians, civil liberties groups and other organisations.

More than 20,000 Sydneysiders have gathered at Bondi Beach exactly a week after two gunmen, targeting Jews celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, shot dead 15 people.

NSW Premier Chris Minns was cheered by the crowd during his speech while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who has been criticised for inaction on antisemitism, was booed at the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies organised event ‘Light Over Darkness’, which was held last night at 6:47pm, the time the massacre started.

The state government had designated Sunday as a Day of Reflection, calling for Australians around the country to light a candle in honour of the lives lost.

Sydney needs to “wrap its arms around the Jewish community” in the wake of Australia’s worst mass shooting since the Port Arthur massacre 29 years ago, the state’s Health Minister has said.

The mass shooting at an event at Bondi Beach last night to mark the first day of the Jewish religious festival Hanukkah was declared a terrorist attack by New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon just after 9:30pm, with officials also saying the attack was motivated by antisemitism.

Residents protesting the lack of affordable housing in the Inner West have marched to a proposed housing development site, currently home to low-income earners, young people and seniors, that has been earmarked for demolition to build luxury apartments.

Over 100 people gathered in Marrickville yesterday to protest Inner West Council’s recently passed Fairer Future Plan, calling for the protection of affordable housing in the area.

The protesters marched through Marrickville’s streets to 50-52 Warren Road, a 1930s Art Deco brick block of 17 low cost flats, where a development application to demolish the existing building and construct a nine-storey residential apartment block of 43 apartments, including eight affordable homes, is under consideration.
