Did you know that iconic, Australian bushranger Ned Kelly & cosmetics Queen, Estee Lauder hosted a podcast on Mamamia? Find out what happens when Wil Anderson slips on the iron mask & Gillian Cosgriff slips on a primer, in the first ever episode of Unlikely Friends. The live audience loved Wil & Gill in full flight and I'm very excited for a wider audience to hear these genius improvisors in action. Subscribe to my Substack to have each instalment delivered to your inbox.

Our first episode comes to you from New York, via Glenrowan.

The Town Criers Podcast's bell will be peeling at the Committee For Portland AGM this Thursday, October 31st at the Portland Yacht Club. This is the official launch of the podcast & an opportunity to thank the people of Portland who made us so welcome as we made our maiden episodes about their town. If you live in Portland or surrounds, come & join Kirsten Diprose & I as we skim of the agenda to get to our bit. There are still a handful of (free) tickets remaining. (Link in comments)

A little while back I asked my social media friends if they wouldn't mind scrolling through their phone contacts to let me know some of the more eclectic pseudonyms that they had used to save phone numbers. The response was frankly overwhelming. The roll called that I logged in preparation to write this story, spread over 15 pages. Enjoy!

The Town Criers Podcast has released its first episode! We were give the key to the city in the historic town of Portland, on the south-west coast of Victoria.

On this adventure, Damian Callinan & Kirsten Diprose gain access to the Port of Portland. Thanks to Cr Karen Stephens, Mayor of the Glenelg Shire Council, for loaning us the bolt cutters.

We also learn about Portland’s very own Town Crier, the late Sid Cuffe; trundle through town on the speed machine that is the Portland Tourist Tram & Vern McCallum shows us his epic collection historical photographs covering south-west Victoria, including some snaps of the armed Militia branch of the Digby CWA.

Thank you to the Committee For Portland for supporting this episode (& part 2, which comes out next week)

Les Cameron has been quietly supporting artists at the arts focused Commercial Hotel Terang, since 2018. Offering free rent to artists developing their work, the pub also hosts troubadours such as myself, who happen to be passing through the area. I'll be performing Double Feature there on Thursday October 24th, followed by a few drinks with the locals before heading through the 'Lodgers Only' door. Really looking forward to this one.

(You can read about Les & the pub in the ABC article in the comments)

Coming soon! Town Criers Podcast - putting small towns on the map!

We’ve all been guilty of harshly judging a town on one bad experience. You got bitten by bed bugs in Burnie; food poisoning from a falafel in Forbes, sprung for speeding in Seymour; kicked out of a club in Cairns or broke up with a Belgian backpacker in Bunbury.

🔔The Town Criers are here to change your perceptions!!

Join comedian and actor Damian Callinan and journalist and podcaster Kirsten Diprose on this road trip through Australia. 🌾

They’ll be bypassing the big cities and stopping to stretch their legs in the smaller towns along the way… to find out what’s worth celebrating 🥳

You can read about the podcast in my Substack post in the cellar.

Trivia Question 1 - What town was used as the main exterior location for the streets of Bodgy Creek in The Merger movie?
Trivia Question 2 - Is Damian Callinan's solo show Double Feature, playing there on Friday, October 4th? If you answered GANMAIN & YES, you'd be correct. Can't wait to come back & activate the Hay & Chaff Display Centre. Thanks to Eastern Riverina Arts & Ganmain Hall & Events for making this possible.

Much like Burke & Wills, who spent the first night of their expedition in Royal Park, I'll be kicking off my upcoming Double Feature tour ridiculously close to home. Inner West friends, come see where I'll be tethering my camels outside the hidden gem that is Mantra Studio (Yarraville). The kitchen & bar opens at 5.30pm for a 7.30pm show.

Charlie Pickering said he was happy to play any character from history on UNLIKELY Friends, a magnanimous gesture he will likely live to regret. Come see Charlie attempting to play Pocahontas without being cancelled this Saturday, August 3rd @ 4.30pm. He will be joined by Genevieve Morris in the historogramulator, who has wisely vetoed most of my suggestions.

Double Feature, Damian Callinan Comedian's award winning solo show based on his mum's 1946 diary, is going back on the road. Tour dates will be announced in a few weeks as tickets start to go on sale. This time around, the show is going to smaller presenters who missed out on the tour in 2023. If you have a hall, community centre, railway siding, squash court, woolshed or boutique pub band room, there are are still a few dates to fill, so slip into the DM's if you want to throw your hat in the ring. (At this stage, the tour is limited to the south east corner of Australia)

Bodgy Creek is Back on the Map

The Bodgy Creek Community Podcast is a welcome return to the world created by comedian, actor & writer Damian Callinan in his award winning feature film & one man show ‘The Merger.’ Given more time to breathe, the characters, rural life minutiae and absurd landscapes feel achingly real. Extending on the cult hit Bodgy Creek Football Club Podcast [2016/17], this iteration introduces audiences to the broader community of the town that wikipedia forgot. ‘Brilliant, surprising, funny - but then again Damian Callinan always has been.’
