We were very sad to learn earlier today of the passing of our dear friend Tom Quinn. Tom dedicated his life to helping other people and he was an important and everpresent part of the Irish community in Perth for many decades. He will be deeply missed.

On behalf of the Irish Scene we would like to wish Kath and the Quinn family our deepest condolences and prayers. We will have a tribute to him in the upcoming November/December edition of the magazine.

In Loving Memory of Thomas (Tom) Quinn

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas (Tom) Quinn, a founding member of The Claddagh Association, long-time Committee Member, and a cherished member of the Irish community. Tom’s legacy of service and dedication has left an indelible mark on all of us, and he will be deeply missed.

Arriving in Perth in 1976, Tom became a pillar of the Irish community. He held various positions in Claddagh, including Chairperson, and was instrumental in founding the organisation that continues to support Irish people in need today. His contributions extended beyond Claddagh—Tom also served as President of The Irish Club in Subiaco, which has long been a hub for Irish activity in Western Australia. His leadership earned him the Brendan Award, along with his wife Kath, recognising their incredible service to our community. He was also a proud player for St Finbarr’s GFC and a passionate supporter of the GAA.

In his own words, recorded as part of his Oral History for Claddagh last year:

“When we started Claddagh, we just got a few people together to fundraise. We ran canteens at sports days, bars, and dances. It was all about bringing people together. Peter McKenna and I were the fundraisers, and we’re both still involved today.”

Tom's vision and hard work have grown Claddagh into the strong community support organisation it is today.

Born in Ardmore, Derry in 1946, Tom’s story is one of resilience and dedication. He fondly recalled his early days in a one-bedroom cottage with his 11 siblings and his move to Perth, where he continued to build a life filled with purpose. He said, “There was a big Irish community in Perth, and we gravitated to the Irish Club. On a Saturday night, we would go dancing, and that’s where I met people who are still friends of mine now.”

His professional life was equally rich, from his time as a plasterer in Coventry and New Zealand to his 27 years in real estate with Professionals – The Kelly Team. Even in retirement, Tom never stopped giving back, helping manage the Irish Club, where he found great pride in fostering connections and offering support to Irish migrants facing hard times.

Tom was truly one in a million—a devoted husband, father, and a compassionate leader in our community. We are forever grateful for the Oral History he recorded, preserving his incredible life story for future generations.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Tom’s family, Kath, Steven, Donna, Tara and extended family during this difficult time. May he rest in peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all. 💔
