The 6th December marks the birthday of Dave Brubeck. A renowned American jazz pianist and composer he is often considered one of the leading figures in the cool jazz movement. His work was characterized by unconventional time signatures, contrasting rhythms, meters, and tonalities.
Born in 1920 he passed away on the 5th December 2012, age 91.

The 21st October marks the birthday of Dizzy Gillespie. He was born in 1917 in South Carolina. A trumpet virtuoso and improviser, he became a major figure in the development of bebop and modern jazz in the 1940's.
He also pioneered Afro-Cuban jazz and won several Grammy Awards, and is regarded as one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time.

Jazz pianist and composer, Thelonious Monk was born this day, 10th October 1917. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't". Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
He passed away in 1982, aged 64.
