The local racing industry will this week farewell Viv Harris who will be remembered as a racing man of fashion and flair. Viv passed away on 7 April aged 91.
He worked many years at the Murrumbidgee Turf Club as jockeys’ room attendant and scales assistant. His duties ranged from keeping the saddlecloths in order to updating the results board after each race.
Racing stalwarts will remember Viv for his impeccable fashion sense and his 37 years working at Anstice & Mackay Menswear – a big supporter of the Wagga Gold Cup carnival back in the day.
Viv was quoted in the MTC’s annual Cup magazine Gold & Glory in 2014: “I enjoy the people ... I have met so many nice trainers and jockeys over the years. I help them out as well as I can and they appreciate it, which makes it all worthwhile.”
A celebration of Viv’s life will be held on Friday 19 April at Wagga RSL Club at 1pm.

The tight-knit picnic jockeys community stepped up to help honour the memory of one of their own at Ardlethan Picnic Races on Saturday.
Sebastian Galea won this year’s Ardlethan Picnic Cup aboard Michael Travers Racing's Dancing In The Sky and he was awarded the Samara Johnson Memorial Trophy.
The trophy, now in its sixth year, was introduced at the club after Samara died in a car accident in 2018. Samara won the Cup on As Easy As in 2017. She was much loved and respected by the racing community.
Samara’s brother Ben shared a few words with the crowd before jockeys at the meeting gathered on stage for a photo with the trophy – the riding pants Samara wore in her 2017 Cup win.
It was a heartfelt moment and the emotion was clear among racegoers.

Leandro Ribeiro was aiming to take home his third Cup in a row after winning in 2022 on Gossip and 2023 on Valadyium. He finished fourth on Valadyium this year, but was the stand-out jockey on the day with four winners on the six-race card. Galea rode the other two.

Racing has lost a true gentleman of the turf with the passing of former top jockey Ray Selkrig.
Ray is pictured here (left) with his great mate and former Berrigan trainer, the late Bert Honeychurch, in the grandstand before the running of the 2004 Wagga Gold Cup at Murrumbidgee Turf Club.
The pair teamed up to win the Wagga Cup with Double Cop in 1976 and again in 1978.
Bert died on Melbourne Cup Day 2015, aged 94.
Ray, winning rider in 35 Group 1 races including the 1961 Melbourne Cup on Lord Fury, was aged 93.

A great privilege to be at Murrumbidgee Turf Club for Danny's Day and 150 years of the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup. Four winners on Cup day and one on Town Plate day gave Wagga's Danny Beasley five for the carnival - and the Tye Angland Medal!

Wagga jockey Josh Richards celebrated a strong win in the Albury Gold Cup aboard Beltoro at Albury Racing Club this afternoon. Richards picked up the ride yesterday and took his chance. The rain held off for a great two days of racing on the border. Beltoro qualifies for Racing NSW’s Big Dance in November. All the action from Albury at trackpix.com.au
