Wine grape growers in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area are bracing for another tough vintage, with newly released prices showing further falls across red and white grape varieties.

Prices have dropped $25 to $50 a tonne, at a time when irrigation water prices are high and demand for wine continues to slump.

Riverina Winegrape Growers CEO Jeremy Cass says growers are at breaking point.

"It is extremely significant, growers were already making below the cost of production and many just cannot hang on any longer,” Mr Cass said.

The Riverina has already lost about 5000 hectares of vineyards since 2022, and the decline is accelerating.

"We are now seeing vineyards being abandoned because people have run out of options,” he said.

A fast moving grass fire almost burned through the southern NSW town of Corowa last week. Despite the extreme fire danger rating, residents say they weren't prepared for such an intense fire so early in the season.

🎄🎅CHRISTMAS CHEER🎁⛄

The paediatric ward at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital held its first Christmas party since the Covid Pandemic, with over 40 kids attending.

It was an opportunity for many local children, who face ongoing and challenging medical conditions, to have a fun day out celebrating the festive season.

Wagga RSL Bowls Club also handed over 12 thousand dollars to the children’s ward, marking 15 years of donations.

❤️OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT🩷

Deniliquin High's principal has praised the community's response to a fire at the town's only high school, saying he's been overwhelmed with support.

Principal Glen Warren says assessors are yet to inspect the site, but 30 of the school's 48 classrooms and the library have been lost.

He says donations of equipment, furniture and resources have come from across New South Wales and Victoria.

Other schools in Deniliquin are also showing their support, St Michael’s School with this act of solidarity from staff students and families.

Riverina MP Michael McCormack says Barnaby Joyce's decision to join One Nation is disappointing.

In a statement, One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson says Mr Joyce will continue to represent his New England electorate until the next election.

She says Mr Joyce will then stand as a candidate for One Nation on the New South Wales Senate ticket.

Mr McCormack says the Nationals gave Mr Joyce the honour as serving as deputy prime minister.

“Our party has given him the great honour and privilege to lead not only the Nationals but to also serve as the Deputy Prime Minister of the country,” Mr McCormack says.

“To then walk away from the party that gave you that honour I think is incredibly disappointing.”
