Old North Studio is a state of the art recording studio located right between Brisbane and the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Built with the artist in mind, and having a space where creativity can flow Old North Studio is the place to come to create, capture and mix your dreams! With a true passion for everything organic, Old North Studio is centred around having top of the line analog outboard equipme

nt feeding into our top quality analog to digital converters before capturing to disk and then back to your ears through only the best studio monitors! We also have the ability to offer true analog recording direct to tape if you wish to go back in time and do it the "old school" way! With an extensive array of microphones, vintage guitar and bass amplifiers and effect units you can truly go crazy crafting just the right sound for your songs! We also have a variety of instruments available to hire on site as well if you so wish! Being situated smack bang between Brisbane and the Sunny Coast we are looking to establish connections with the amazing talent from these thriving musical areas and helping bands and artists to get their music out to the world! Here at we are big fans of all this AUSSIE! We have a selection of locally made gear in the studio including probably the biggest collection of in the world! Currently having some serviced by who also builds killer amps (one on the way to us shortly) he is our recommended tech for all things amp related! Why does our head engineer love ? This is an NT2-A from his personal mic collection (of around 100 mics might we add!) that was gifted to him by Rode 20+ years ago when he worked in a local music store.. while tracking a session a few weeks ago we noticed some noise in the mic… contacted the team at rode! They said “send it down and we will look at it!” Two weeks later the mic returns with a brand new capsule and not only that they replaced the grille as well! How is that for service! Let’s see this mic rock another 20+ years with some of you amazing artists we look forward to recording up here at Old North!

In a time where music is “drag and drop” or “AI” we here at old north believe in doing things the “old school” way! Something as simple as a tambourine deserves the same respect and appreciation as any other element of the song! Ross from grooving hard on a new song! Tambo miced by a stereo pair of .engineering C42 into 511 preamps followed by .audio Xpressor into the Orion converter captured on the Mac Studio via Cubase Pro 14! No cutting corners!

RIP Steve Albini. A great audio engineer more would know for his controversial recording of Nirvana's In Utero album (I love the tone and live feel on this album personally), he also worked with other legendary bands such as The Jesus Lizard, The Pixies, PJ Harvey, Veruca Salt, Neurosis, Mogwai, The Breeders & Hemet just to name a few. His noise rock / post-hardcore bands Big Black & Shellac also blew my mind, especially Big Black in the early eighties. I'm spinning Big Black all day today. I suggest you do the same.

On the 5th of April 1994 Kurt Cobain left the building (30 years ago). I remember hearing the news on the radio on that day while driving in my ute & remember the way it hit me. There were no mobile phones, facebook or Instagram but you could still feel the reverberation somehow. On the exact same day in 2002 (23 years ago) we lost Layne Staley, another huge influence on me. On the 5th of April 1966, Mike McCready was born. Mike & Layne were in the band Mad Season (formed in 1994) with Barrett Martin & Mark Lanegan & Alice in Chains also released Jar of Flies in 1994. Mike Starr (ex AIC bassist) was born on the 4th April 1994. Born in April myself & loving all the abovementioned artists, this time of year always seeds a melancholic feeling inside me & with all this rain around, it only seems fitting to be sitting next to my record player listening to all these amazing artists on vinyl loudly.
