Mac&Ernie Marketing Strategy & Training Marketing, social media & customer experience training & strategy for SMEs & community leaders.

🌱The gap between the promises you make in your marketing and the reality of your customers’ experience is where disappointment is most likely to occur🌱

I founded Mac&Ernie to provide social media training, strategic marketing and an understanding of why customer experience matters - to small businesses and community organisations throughout Gippsland and regional areas of Australia. There is noth

ing I love more than providing my clients with ‘oh wow!’ moments; those times when you learn something new, and immediately wonder how your business ever lived without it. That happens a lot because even though social media and digital marketing has been around for a long time it's still very new to many business owners - especially because it changes so often! With over 25 years of marketing and advertising experience, a stack of qualifications and a proven track record of putting social media and marketing to work for business, I am well placed to help you navigate the sometimes-confusing world of digital and social marketing. My workshops, one on one sessions and strategic marketing advice provide practical, accessible and customised advice that you can act on immediately. I also create custom workshops for larger businesses wanting to upskill staff or start a social media or marketing strategy from scratch. At the moment, Mac&Ernie only operates 'physically' in Gippsland and the eastern suburbs of Melbourne but, thanks to the magic of technology I can be anywhere. If you follow me on social media, you'll know I'm a chronic oversharer of chunky actionable tips and you can find them on my Instagram and Facebook profiles or by listening to my podcast - Small Town Business - via your favourite app or at www.smalltownbusinesspodcast.au

Back again talking about the Instagram Repost functionality because I’ve had a lot of questions and chats over the weekend—winning the Q&A game is “why should I use it?”

Swipe across for my thoughts but pay attention to the second slide 😉

If you’re a service-based business or community organisation looking to stretch your reach beyond your existing followers, this new function could be very useful 👇

When you’re coming up with content ideas, keep circling back to “why would someone share this?” and if you can’t think of a reason, try again. Sharing is such a powerful way to get discovered. Sharing is how people communicate.

Need help? I’m just a few taps away 🫶 Erika

Here are my thoughts on the new repost tab:

1. Use it to share stuff or small biz you love. I’ve started popping in some of my upcoming events, favourite people, gratitude posts, resources and things as they occur to me. I plan to keep it to maybe 12 posts and keep moving things around.

2. Use it to promote yourself by stacking it with your own posts, bringing them back up from lower down your grid. Kind of like the old Guides functionality.

That said, we are supposed to be getting the ability to do that in our Home grid so I’m not going to spend too much time organising reposts.

To be honest, now I’ve sat on it for a day, I don’t hate it.

👉 I like that you can add a little comment that’s visible on the cover image.

👉 I like the Guides vibe because I miss that functionality so bad 🥹

👉 I like that I can use it to promote other businesses.

How will you use it? Will you use it?

FYI The Instagram map (coming soon) is opt IN and all the people out there creating hysteria over it just want the reach and attention.

Also Instagram has always been tracking you and what you watch and what you search for…only one of those things is partly solved by turning off location sharing.

This is not news 🤷‍♀️

That said, don’t use these tracking maps they are stupid and potentially dangerous…in my opinion.

The new age laws for social media use (in Australia) may have opened the doors to a new scam (of course).

SBS recently reported that "many Australians mistakenly believe they'll need to submit sensitive documents — like their driver's licence or passport — to continue to scroll on Instagram or TikTok."

Not true!

In fact one of the conditions of this new legislation is that the platforms must find a way to action it without requiring any government-issued ID.

So don't fall for it and please tell anyone you think might be vulnerable to this type of scam.

If you ever get something that looks like an instruction, request or link from a social media platform, you must check and double check its origin.

If you're not sure, send me a screenshot in a message and I'm happy to help.

Take care out there...

There are stacks of things I’d do differently if I was starting now, keeping in mind that 10 years ago this space was very very different. Here are three of them:

1. Less channels! Gawd the time I’ve wasted posting content in places where I felt I should be, rather than where I knew my audience would be.

That is straight up FOMO and a pesky scarcity mindset that loves to torment new business start-ups.

I’d pick three or four that fit together ie. website, email, LinkedIn or TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and just focus in on making those channels work in harmony.

2. I wouldn’t have built my first website myself. I would have found someone to build something small and mighty with kick-ass SEO.

It took me too long to finally get around to updating it because...busy. Because back then I thought social media was enough. It’s not!

3. I would have used paid ads to get straight into the feeds and minds of my ideal clients.

Back then I was running ads for everyone but myself. Maybe I thought I had to constantly prove that organic worked.

It did when I was starting, but just organic marketing now is much harder, made much easier by the occasional paid campaign or whatever your budget allows.

-
Refitting, revising, changing with the times is all part of the process. If you don’t learn you don’t change, if you don’t change you won’t grow 🤷‍♀️

One of the reasons I love my role as a business mentor is that I get to revisit past mistakes or at least look backwards with different information, better data, the gift of hindsight 😎 Sometimes I turn this on myself.

🌱What’s one thing you’d change? Or do any of these resonate with you?

It's a pinch zoom on this one, as I'm giving something new a go.

Instagram's new integration with Google means you need to be extra super focused on keywords though, you probably should already be doing this because I’ve been banging on about it for years now 🤪 But the stakes are about to get higher - think about all that great content you’re creating showing up in Google! Yes please 👌

This is one Instagram update that is going to change the odds of you being found by people searching for what you make, do or sell.

I’ll be extra sure to add what I offer as a marketing strategist and social media trainer into my captions, and if I can’t, I’ll just pop in a few hashtags like a lil security blanket.

Are you as excited for this as I am?

It’s easy to cheer for someone else’s wins—sharing their excitement, hyping them up, and making sure they know how amazing they are. But when it comes to our own achievements? That can feel…awkward.

Why is it so hard to celebrate ourselves? Maybe it feels like bragging, or we downplay what we’ve done because it “wasn’t that big a deal.”

But here’s the thing: if you’d celebrate a friend for it, why not give yourself the same kindness?

Here’s the other thing: algorithms looove it when you are celebrating and attracting positive comments.

So you should do it more! Here’s some thought-starters:

1️⃣ Reframe it: Think of it as sharing, not bragging. “I’m proud of this and wanted to put it out there!” feels different from “Look how great I am.”

2️⃣ Add gratitude: Acknowledging the journey makes it feel more grounded. “I’m so grateful for the hard work or the people that got me here.”

3️⃣ Keep it simple: You don’t need a speech. “This happened, and I’m really proud” is enough.

Remember, celebrating your own win doesn’t take away from someone else’s. There’s enough light for everyone to shine.

How do YOU get past the awkwardness of sharing your achievements? Or is it something you’re still working on? Feel free to give yourself a little shout out in the comments or a nudge to someone you know who has been holding onto some good news ❤️

💛I love love. Especially when I hear small businesses talk about their loyal customers and how they have supported their business over the years 🥰

You don’t get loyal customers by accident though. Loyalty is like a marriage–a connection made after a courtship. What you do in that courtship period can make a huge difference to your future together.

So what is love? It’s not double-tapping on a post (though please go ahead, I could use the dopamine hit 😉). Genuine customer love translates into brand or business loyalty and referrals–both things that bring regular income into your business.

👉Swipe across to find out how to speak your customers’ love language and start working on your own ideas because this is not a tip, rather a thought-starter. Remember, I’m just a message away for a little bit of help if you need it 🫶Erika
