UFC 300 takes place in Vegas this weekend!

#4 ranked Arman Tsarukyan is taking on #1 ranked Charles Oliveira in a lightweight battle which will most certainly have title implications.

Arman fought to a close decision loss in his UFC debut to current UFC Pound-for-Pound Kingpin Islam Makhachev. Islam halted Arman's 12-fight win streak on his run to the top of the division.

Arman has dropped only one fight in his last 9, on his run to the upper echelons of the UFC Lightweight Division.

I've been lucky enough to play a bit-role in his journey to the top, when he asked me to run his Strength and Conditioning Program whilst he was in Thailand preparing for his UFC Fight Night Co-Main Event bout against another top 15 contender in Damir Ismagulov.
Arman went on to break Damir's 19-fight win streak.
*Side note - I had already done multiple fight camps with Damir prior to this, which I address in the video.

Initially, Arman had brought his Coach and training partner for a month-long trip, then decided to stay for the remainder of the camp, rather than return to his main MMA home in the States, American Top Team. If I recall correctly, Damir was likely going to train at Top Team, after his stint in the Kazakh Mountains.

Either way, I had the benefit of running a solid 10-Week Training Camp with Arman and his team.

Our strategy was 3 x S & C sessions per week for the first 6 weeks, then 2 x S & C sessions, plus optional extras as required, to round out the final month of fight camp.
*Unfortunately, I got pinkeye towards the back end of camp, so I linked in with Coach Sergey and he put the finishing touches on, under my guidance.

Let me tell a story which has always stuck with me...

The huge printing presses of a major Chicago newspaper began malfunctioning on the Saturday before Christmas, putting all the revenue for advertising that was to appear in the Sunday paper in jeopardy. None of the technicians could track down the problem. Finally, a frantic call was made to the retired printer who had worked with these presses for over 40 years. “We’ll pay anything; just come in and fix them,” he was told.
When he arrived, he walked around for a few minutes, surveying the presses; then he approached one of the control panels and opened it. He removed a dime from his pocket, turned a screw 1/4 of a turn, and said, “The presses will now work correctly.” After being profusely thanked, he was told to submit a bill for his work.
The bill arrived a few days later, for $10,000.00! Not wanting to pay such a huge amount for so little work, the printer was told to please itemize his charges, with the hope that he would reduce the amount once he had to identify his services. The revised bill arrived: $1.00 for turning the screw; $9,999.00 for knowing which screw to turn.

Strength and conditioning is about balancing what everyone considers "hard work" with the restoration/preparation drills that will allow the "hard work" to be consistent.

If you're injured. You're not getting better.

The harder you drive your car, and the more mileage you put on the clock, the more regular maintenance becomes necessary to keep your car on the road.

So it is with our bodies. If you've lived a hard- charging life as I have, you don't necessarily have to lose your edge because everything hurts all the time...
Instead, take responsibility for doing some maintenance work to keep you in the game, whilst addressing those niggles in a way that leaves you feeling far better than when you started.
