HUMAN RIGHTS DAY
As a future social worker, our philosophy is guided by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is also one of the many frameworks we use in practice and is called a human rights–based approach.
Our role is to work towards the realisation of these rights in every human we walk alongside.
Those rights are not given, you are born with them. Yet, we often see a lot of abuse, discrimination and violations of human rights in our world.
As a social worker, It is my responsibility to inform you of what your rights are, and it is also your responsibility to hold other stakeholders accountable like governments, the places you work, your family, the services provided to you, schools, universities, your friends, communities and basically all of society.
Educate yourself about what your rights are. Since I started studying social work, my eyes have been widely opened to the dire extent of how many of our human rights are being violated. It’s heartbreaking.
Stand up tall.
Empowerment comes as a collective. Fight for your rights, and especially for the rights of marginalised people.
We can built a better as a society if we all recognise everyone’s human dignity, value, and freedom. Human rights remind us of our shared humanity and our fundamental worth.
These are just some of the basic human rights:
The right to life, freedom from discrimination, the right to a fair trial, freedom from torture or cruel treatment, freedom of speech, freedom of religion,, and the rights to health, education, and an adequate standard of living.
Stand up for your rights ✊✌️❤️🌎
