🐎Create Your Own Schedule was our July rally. Members were able to choose their own lessons, provided they included either a flatwork lesson or protocol test and completed no more than three lessons. Horsemastership was included, with a great range of options: jumping, novelties, in-hand work and a protocol test. It also gave us another opportunity to use our Bendigo Community Bank dressage arenas.
🐎Our August rally again featured in-hand work with Sally Davis, an important part of horsemastership that helps riders build a strong connection with their horses and ponies on the ground. Mounted lessons included show jumping, flatwork and fun out on the cross-country course.
🙏Thank you to all our coaches for both rallies, and to the parents, friends and guardians who supported our riders. And a big shout out to our dressage arena sponsor Bendigo Bank Community Bank Bullsbrook-Ellenbrook.

Thanks so much to Clare Johansen - Equine Podiotherapist for the interesting and informative presentation at our rally on the weekend. Clare presented ‘Healthy Hooves, Sound Horses: recognising healthy feet and spotting problems early’.
It was great to see our young members (and parents!) engaged and listening to how to spot a healthy, or not so healthy, hoof and learning when intervention might be needed. Even our youngest members got to get in on the action.
It was a lovely start to the cool morning before the riding got underway for the day.

Did you know this includes you too?

If you’re on the sidelines at Pony Club - as a parent or supporter - this is worth knowing.

Under the Pony Club Australia Horse Welfare Policy, it’s not just riders who are responsible for how equipment is used.

It is a breach of the policy for parents and supporters to instruct or encourage a rider to use a whip, spurs or reins in a non-approved way - that is, as punishment or in anger.

This is often heard on the sidelines when a horse refuses, with calls to “smack him” or similar.

If this occurs, the person urging that action may have the matter referred for investigation under the PCA Conduct and Disciplinary Policy.

If the rider then goes on to misuse the equipment, they may also face disciplinary action, and can be immediately removed from the activity or competition.

Most people on the sidelines are there to support, but what’s called out can influence what happens in the saddle.

Support the rider, leave the coaching to the coach, and keep horse welfare front of mind.

❓️Wondering what an ‘approved way’ actually means?

Pony Club Australia’s education is grounded in equitation science, and recognises the gentle use of equipment such as the whip, spurs and reins as a form of negative reinforcement on the ground and under saddle.

In this context, negative reinforcement means applying a light aid, then removing it the moment the horse responds. The release is the reward, and that's how the horse learns.
