Pyney’s Pie Reviews has ticked off stop number 52, this time at the 125-year-old Willaura Bakery in western Victoria.
After camping the night at Lake Bolac Hotel, Pyney followed a local tip and made his way to the historic bakery, now run by owner Peter, who swapped disability support work for baking nine years ago.
Using his late father’s 75-year-old tins and tools, Peter produces a classic range with 11 pie flavours on the board.
Pyney chose the Beef, Cheese and Sriracha pie – a combo he’d never seen before. At $7.50, it scored 45/50 overall: full of flavour, golden and flakey on top, with just a slightly soft base.
The spicy kick won him over, with meat/fill ratio and serving temp both hitting perfect 10s.
He says Willaura Bakery is well worth the detour, praising Peter’s humble approach and the bakery’s garden seating, while also giving a nod to the Lake Bolac Hotel for good food and camping.
