🦘✨ First Wildlife Virtual Fencing Installed in the Hawkesbury! ✨🦘
Over the weekend, the first section of Wildlife Virtual Fencing was installed on The Driftway, Richmond – covering approximately 225 metres.
🏡 This fencing was funded by our amazing community and is one strategy to reduce motor vehicle collisions with kangaroos at night. The devices activate when car headlights approach, emitting light and sound to deter kangaroos from crossing the road.
🤜 This is also the first time this technology has been trialled in a metropolitan area in NSW – something the Hawkesbury should be very proud of! Richmond was chosen as the starting point because it has the highest number of kangaroo collisions in our region.
We are now seeking approval from Transport for NSW to trial additional sections on Londonderry and Castlereagh Roads.
🙏 Thank You
This project was a true community effort:
⭐️ HEN committee members with special mention to Nick, Matilda, Allister, and Lyn
⭐️ Everyone who attended the fundraising night, donated money, prizes, or time
⭐️Hawkesbury City Council and councillors Danielle Wheeler and Sarah McMahon
⭐️ David from Wildlife Safety Solutions
⭐️ WIRES members who respond to rescues and collect collision data
🌟 And of course, Anne Marks for her tireless work to protect wildlife in our area and for bringing this project forward, and a special shoutout to her husband for the hard work on installation day!
This is the first of three sections we have planned, focusing on key crossing points to help keep both people and kangaroos safe on our roads.
If this trial is successful, this fencing could become an option for other high-risk roads in the Hawkesbury.
💚 Together, we’ve made this happen, and it’s just the beginning.
