From the outside in, Sydney’s binsad have had an impressively busy 6 months. The band has quickly grown from a humble DIY project to one of the best known and well loved bands in the scene. Their unique ‘soft-loud’ sound pulls influences from everywhere from sparkling indie pop, harsh emo and post hardcore to “classic ‘band playing a song’ rock” — all with a definitively femme sound and spirit. We spoke to the band about their new album ‘pearl’, their busy touring schedule, and what they love about Sydney’s live music community.

Hello once again everyone! Just want to give a headsup that this gig guide is extra large! Not apologising for it though (well, just maybe to our illustrator Finn who had to fit them all in). Sarah Pilbeam—who goes by SarahVision—is a photographer and videographer, known for her work within the music scene. The art she produces extends into poetry and collage (she created the covers for this issue!) feels effortless, she sees a moment before it happens, and is always there to capture it in the most perfect way. I first met Sarah when she was floating around the warehouse taking photos of Hot Apple Band when they were recording. I instantly loved being in her presence, and told her I’d interview her for the next issue pretty much because I wanted to get to know her more. And I’m so glad I did. I met up with Sarah at a bar near her house in Melbourne—a perfect dark little cosy spot, where we pretty much just jumped straight into discussing in depth the ideas behind the theme of this issue, her practice and the way in which she rolls with it. Speaking with her was a real pleasure, and something I kept bringing up in the interview was that I was so glad that I interviewed her to show this perspective to you all. I think it’s so important to show that you don’t have to put pressure on yourself to be something, you can simply just be and create for the enjoyment, you don’t have to turn something you’re really good at into a career and I feel like it’s a perspective we all need to hear more often.

✩ sesame girl ✩ are shimmering and slide-guitaring more than ever in their brand new song Superstar, out today. It’s a special and sweet ode to friendship and championing your friends as they do great things.

Out the back of Dicey Riley’s, we discussed the song and video—directed by the band and HOLL with help from the skills of digicamvids—highs and lows of writing and recording and how they ended up painting an entire room in an abandoned house pink.

Jamie Timony and Todd Andrews have long been a mainstay in Australia’s indie music scene, first and foremost together they’re 2/4 of punk-rock band and 2/2 of their podcast What A Great Punk, where they sat down to interview just about every band in the country. I spoke to Jamie and Todd about their latest album Godspeed, and how it felt to wrap up their podcast on after a solid 500 episodes.

The band begins their Godspeed Aus Tour this Thursday, kicking things off on the Sunshine Coast and work their way around the country, playing Sydney and Wollongong with our friends in April!
