In 2023, 43-year-old Oliver Shulz became the first Australian soldier to be charged with a war crime-related murder after helmet-cam-footage showed him shooting Afghan man Dad Mohammed in 2012.
The Shulz trial has the potential to set an important precedent: Australian soldiers are not above international law.
The trial is not set to begin until at least 2027, and Mr Shulz could face life in jail if found guilty. The case is listed for further arraignment on December 12.
