A Monday Recycling Update- Over the weekend, we received an email request to pickup and recycle this Roseman piano (unfortunately we can't because the customer is located 17,000km away in Oxford UK). Apparently the Council over there does collect pianos and then sends them to landfill. This just should not happen -it is a waste on every level to be sending such a beautiful instrument and/or timber and metal resource to reside in landfill forever more.
In 2024, your would think we would be well and truly beyond the mindset of burying in the ground anything that we don't want or use anymore. But the economic reality is that this is the easiest and cheapest option for everyone, at least until all the resources are used up and all the landfills are full. The whole recycling and circular economy concepts only work if :
1) The true environmental cost of virgin raw materials is factored into making "new"items;
2) Governments mandate recycled content and actually support markets by buying it;
3) Manufacturers take back their products at end-of-life and reuse as feedstock into their "new" products;
4) Consumers demand recycled content where possible and preference recycled over new.
Sounds difficult? Absolutely it is - we are a long way from making this work. However Pianos Recycled is committed to playing its part by calling out what needs to be, and trail blazing new approaches to try and find economic AND sustainable solutions to this wicked problem.
