The Bulli & Clifton Times

The Bulli & Clifton Times The official page of The Bulli & Clifton Times FEBRUARY 2012 marked the launch of the online publication, The Bulli Times.

The blog style news, information and opinion site is a not-for-profit initiative, which I hope will gain the support of writers, reporters and readers living and working in the stretch of coast line from Wollongong north to the Royal National Park. With 30 years of experience as a newspaper journalist, I hope to bring The Bulli Times’ readers a fair, interesting and unbiased look at news and information in the northern districts of the Illawarra. I welcome contributions from community and sporting groups for inclusion. The Times also is looking for voluntary correspondents to contribute news and information from suburbs and villages of Wollongong’s north. If you have a story, media release or news or images for inclusion in The Bulli Times email [email protected].

This will wrap up Wollongong City Council’s Playground Renewal Program for the last 12 months, which included the recent renewals of much-loved play spaces at Bellambi, Horsley, West Wollongong and Coledale.
These playgrounds received new play facilities, replacing ageing equipment and improving accessibility. Some locations also included supporting infrastructure like picnic settings and connecting footpaths.

THE Helensburgh Community Centre and Library project has reached a key milestone, with the Development Application (DA) lodged featuring updated plans that respond to community priorities.
Concept designs for the new facility were shared with the community in late February, supported by online and in-person engagement sessions across February and March. Community members were invited to share their thoughts, with their input helping to refine the designs.
The plans outline a contemporary, accessible two-storey facility (1,240m²) with flexible indoor and outdoor spaces, modern library and a large hall that can seat over 200 people and support a wide range of community uses, from workshops and fitness classes, to events, exhibitions and performances.
Community feedback highlighted parking supply, environmental performance and integration with the local environment as key priorities.
In response:
Parking provision has doubled for the facility, increasing to 22 spaces. Additional town centre parking improvements are also planned through Council’s Infrastructure Delivery Program (2026–28 ).
Sustainability features have been enhanced through a climate-responsive design.
A new landscaping design has been developed, inspired by the local area.

Another major step has been made towards a fully realised Grand Pacific Walk, with engagement on a key section of the project at Coledale now complete.
The Grand Pacific Walk is an envisioned 60km shared path running alongside Grand Pacific Drive from the Royal National Park to Lake Illawarra. Works have been completed at Stanwell Park, Seacliff Bridge, Coalcliff, Coledale Beach and Clifton, while staged works at Austinmer are underway.
Wollongong City Council’s next phase of the project – Coledale Stage 1 – connects Austinmer and Coledale including the Sharky Beach Carpark.
Based on community input, the revised design will revisit ways to include more than one entry/exit point to the renewed Sharky Beach carpark, while minimising the potential reduction of parking spaces and impact to the existing bus zone and heritage Norfolk Island Pines.

Camping or glamping could be on offer at Bulli Tops under Wollongong City Council’s plan to revitalise historic escarpment lookouts.
The plan to reboot tourism and café offerings at two of the northern Illawarra’s most iconic lookouts is on the path to public exhibition following Council endorsement on Monday night (27 July).
A new draft Plan of Management (PoM) for Wollongong City Council-managed Crown Land at Bulli and Sublime Point lookouts proposes offering long-term leases for business operators to re-open disused café premises at the picturesque sites, as well as new camping opportunities to boost tourism in the region.
An endorsed PoM is a legislative requirement for all Council-managed Crown Reserves and guides the management and permissible use of public land, including recreational activities, environmental protection measures, and commercial operations.
The newly endorsed draft PoM covers two sections of Bulli Pass Scenic Reserve – Hopetoun Park, which contains Bulli Lookout and Cliffhanger Café, and Lady Fuller Park, which contains Sublime Point Lookout and kiosk. It’s proposed to categorise both parks for general community use, remove of the current 12-month lease limit for the cafes, and make camping/glamping an additional permitted use of the sites.
The proposals, aimed at enhancing tourism opportunities associated with the Great Southern Walk and Illawarra Escarpment Walking Tracks, also align with Council’s Tourism Accommodation Strategy (2025).
