The need for certainty.

The need for certainty is a natural human need, but at the same time a vice of thinking. If you're out on a picnic with your kids and don't know if it's going to rain or if it's going to be clear, the kids will wait for a reasoned answer, and your "I don't know" will disappoint them.

But as long as people are not taught to refrain from unsubstantiated judgments, some presumptuous prophet will be able to take them anywhere ... Every science instills in people its own virtue; to be restrained in judgment is best taught by philosophy.
