What was meant to be a major announcement in Wycheproof on Friday turned into a no-show from Transmission Company Victoria (TCV), after around 200 farmers and locals gathered to protest the controversial Victoria–New South Wales Interconnector (VNI) West project.
Federal Member for Mallee Anne Webster said five shires had been invited to attend the event, but TCV pulled out at the last minute, citing “safety concerns.” No announcement was made, and no explanation was given beyond that.
Protesters were voicing frustration over what they say has been a disgraceful lack of consultation and ongoing railroading of regional communities by the Allan and Albanese Labor governments.
“TCV failed to front up,” said Dr Webster. “If the Allan and Albanese governments continue to treat regional communities with this ongoing disdain and recklessness, they’ll find more people will protest – not less.”
The backlash against VNI West continues to grow, as locals feel their livelihoods, land, and voices are being ignored.
