Mad to the Max..
This episode takes us to Broken Hill and Silverton where we we get a bit of an art fix. Rose finds her happy place when we visit a house surrounded by wonderful mosaics. We head out to a little place called Silverton which would have been an abandoned town except for the art galleries, bakery and the pub,,,, and the Mad Max Museum., That's right, a museum dedicated to the movie franchise Mad Max.
Because of copywrite on photos, we weren't allowed to record it all due to the many photos, but out the back of the showroom is a collection of old cars and other bits and pieces that were scavenged from the surrounding landscape and housed in this fascinating museum.
Come with us as we check out the art work and memorabilia in the Broken Hill region.

In this episode we take on the Rawnsley Station 4WD track. Pick up a key and pay the moderate fee at the Rawnsley Station Caravan Park office and then head out to the locked gate.
The drive is rated "easy" and takes you all along the bottom of the escarpment and includes numerous dry creek crossings and incredible scenery as you wind your way along the bottom of the range.
There is a more difficult option available, although this was unfortunately closed when we were there. Still, it was a fantastic drive and we thoroughly enjoyed it.
Come with us on this adventure to see the fabulous Flinders Ranges in all its glory.

Road Kill for lunch?
Rose and I drive through Glass Gorge to the little town of Parachilna where we have a Feral Feast at the Parachilna Hotel. We eat our Coat of Arms, kangaroo, emu plus some camel sausages served in a variety of ways.
It was like a road kill and bush food degustation. Kangaroo tail in a sweet chilli style sauce, emu pate, kangaroo steak with saltbush and camel sausages, finished off with a delicious Quandong desert. It was a fantastic meal served with their own brewed beer.
The drive through Glass Gorge was spectacular. What a fantastic day we had in the Flinders Ranges . Come with us in this feral adventure on YouTube

This is the link to Episode 2 of our Flinders Ranges adventure where we take as walk up to the viewing points into the famous Wilpena Pound. This geological feature is a depression in the folds of the uplifted strata from an ancient sea bed.
As you walk and drive in this area there is just view after view after view. The drives are easy but may be impassable during wet weather due to the many creek crossings that are mostly dry throughout the year. Check with the local campsites management and they will soon let you know what the general conditions are like.

Come with us as we start our adventure in the Flinders Ranges as we find ourselves in ruins.
Early pioneering settlers from the British Isles and other places tried to eke out a living from this harsh but beautiful landscape. Some had prospered but many found it hard and the ruins of many of their buildings stand testament to their struggles.
We base ourselves at Rawnsley Station caravan park and explore the area and take in the stunning vistas that present at every turn in the road.

Some people have commented about our obsession with volcanoes as we have climbed quite a few in our recent videos. A bit over 20 years ago Rose and I went to Vanuatu and flew to the island of Tanna and went on a tour that took us to the very active Yassur Volcano. in one of our videos I promised to see if I could find the old footage of this experience. Well here it is. I managed to be able to convert the old format to something I could edit for our YouTube.

This link will take you to this very special episode that travels back over 20 years to when we could actually walk to the top of this active volcano, not fences, no safety regulations, just there, standing on the rim of an active volcano doing its thing. what an awesome experience. I hope you enjoy this very exciting episode as we watch lava being hurled high into the sky and watch it falling all around.

Come with us as we explore some caves in the South East of South Australia. What a beautiful and wonderfully diverse geological landscape.
Ancient seabeds and Tectonic movements and lots of time, have made some stunning features that are just spectacular and have to be visited if you are ever in the area.

The South East area of South Australia holds some surprising geological features that just have to be experienced if you are travelling Australia. The ground is mainly limestone from an ancient seabed that has been exposed as the sea levels changed over millions of years. Evidence of this is found in the numerous seashells and coral formations that are found all over the place in exposed limestone rock. The limestone has been eaten away by rainfall and has formed large caves that sometimes collapse forming large sinkholes.
Throw into the mix some volcanic activity and you end up with sinkholes and volcanic craters that are sometimes full of crystal clear water or abundant wildlife and vegetation.
The mainly flat ancient seabed is peppered with tall volcanic scoria cones and these are just waiting to be climbed so you can admire the expansive views of this very scenic area.
come with us as we explore the region and show you just a little of what there is to be found in the town built on volcanos and sinkholes.

Come with us we climb and explore more volcanos plus some amazing sinkholes in South Australia. Right in the middle of the city of Mount Gambier is a sink hole, and it's not the only one. The sinkholes provide a microclimate that encourages beautiful plant life. Also in the town is a dormant volcano that last erupted only a few thousand years ago. And just down the road a bit is another dormant volcano, Mount Shank. This one was just asking to be climbed, so we did. The stunning views are well worth it.
Mount Gambier is well worth the visit and the surrounding area just keeps on giving.

We visit the town of Port Macdonnell and are blown away, literally and figuratively.
https://youtu.be/Llmb6esU4yI

The area is absolutely stunning and well worth the visit. It was a pity it was blowing so hard that we could hardly sleep at night as the van was rocking (from the wind).
But having said that, it added to the experience, as we are on the Great Southern Ocean after all.
We are close to the Roaring Forties which references the westerly trade winds that carried ships across the Great Australian Bight towards their destinations in Melbourne and Sydney as the great influx of convicts and free settlers made their way to Australia in the later 1700s and 1800s and early 1900s. Many of these made unexpected landfalls as their ships founded in storms that are frequent in this area.
Come with us as we dive in to this episode in the Southernmost part of South Australia.
