I really haven’t posted much on here lately 🙈

Life has been pretty full on. So much of my time has been going into Sarah & Sophia 💗 Autism/ ADHD affirming | Sensory & Fidgets and it’s kind of crazy how many opportunities are coming our way with it. We’re just taking them as they come and seeing where it all goes 💗

At the same time we’re navigating the whole back-to-school transition, which has taken up a lot of headspace too.

So between school, markets, stock and all the usual life stuff… I’m definitely ready for a little break 😂

And thankfully I have a much-needed one coming in October ✈️☀️

Any guesses where I’m going? 👀

I hope there’s lots of laughing, creating, learning about things they actually care about, finding their people and feeling like they belong.

One of mine is starting primary school and one is starting 5th class.

For us, it’s about happy kids who feel good about themselves.

That they know who they are is enough, I know there’ll be hard days. I just hope there are plenty of good ones in between. And whatever this year is like, I hope they always know how proud I am of them and how loved they are.

When a parent tells you what their child needs, please listen.

We know our children.

We know what helps them feel safe, what can increase their anxiety and what has worked before.

Sometimes the smallest bit of preparation or flexibility can completely change how a transition feels for a child.

Good transition support isn’t just trying different ways to get a child through the door.

It’s planning beforehand.

Building familiarity.

Acknowledging their fear instead of trying to push past it.

Meeting them where they are.

Talking to the people who know them best.

Watching their responses and changing your approach when something is increasing their distress.

Support shouldn’t begin once a child is already overwhelmed.

And “they’re fine once they’re in” doesn’t undo what it took for them to get there.

It doesn’t erase the pain of watching your child so distressed, or the weight you carry with you when you eventually walk away.

They might be okay now.

But that doesn’t mean it was okay getting there.

And when children repeatedly tell us, through their words or their distress, that something isn’t working…

we need to listen.

We can’t keep asking children to fit into environments that aren’t adapting to meet their needs and then wonder why some eventually can’t go in at all.

We need to do better.

( and I know how much teachers and schools have to manage, and this isn’t about expecting anyone to get everything right).

Sending so much love to anyone feeling this right now. 💗

Back to school can bring up so much more than we sometimes talk about.

If this is you too, I see you. I’m right there with you.

Still processing this one.
. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m not going to suddenly stop being sensitive. It’s just part of who I am, I suppose.

I’m trying not to waste my time wishing I wasn’t, because look where that’s got me 😂

Learning to work with who I am instead of constantly wishing I was different.

Swords Castle 💗🏰

We had such a lovely day at our hometown market today. So many familiar faces, new faces, chats, laughs, crafts and lots of fidgets 😂

Thank you so much to everyone who came to see us. We really enjoyed this one 💗

We’d LOVE to do more family-friendly and neurodivergent-friendly markets, community days and events.

So if you’re organising something you think Calm Crafts would be a good fit for, or know of something coming up, please keep us in mind 💛

And yes… Sophia celebrated a good day’s work by buying herself a pair of Heelys 😂

Okay, bye-bye! 👋

Hopefully we’ll be back again soon 🤞

If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ll probably remember there were a couple of years where I went really quiet on social media.

Life became about surviving.

Supporting my children.

I had lots of health appointments of my own too. A year of therapy. Lots of healing and trying to find space for myself.

This year I made big changes and I realised I’d been waiting for life to settle down before I allowed myself to really live again.

But I could have spent years waiting for that moment.

My circumstances haven’t magically changed. If anything, they’ve become more complex.

This year, I’ve slowly started saying yes to myself again.

I’ve started learning and creating again.

Meeting people after years of hibernation and putting yself out there.

And I can’t remember the last time I felt this excited about the future.

I have to pinch myself that this Sunday I’ll be at a wellness festival, chatting to people, sharing Sarah & Sophia 💗 Calm Crafts | Sensory & Fidgets and doing something that lights my soul on fire again.

Calm Crafts didn’t come from life becoming easier.

It came from giving myself permission to create in the middle of a life that is still beautifully messy (and hard)

If this resonates

Where can you create a little more joy, creativity and peace with the life you have right now?

Sending love
Sarah xx

The teacher said sorry.

I was in 4th class.

We were lined up in the hall and I was absent-mindedly touching a crepe paper display on the wall.

The teacher came over and hit me on the back of the head and told me to stop.

Later that day she called me and my friend over. She apologised and gave us each a keyboard rubber.

Me and my friend wondered if the apology was because she didn’t want us to tell anyone.

I don’t know.

What I do know is that more than 30 years later, I still remember that moment.

I learnt to keep my head down, be good and follow the rules.

Avoid drawing attention to myself.

It didn’t disappear when I left primary school. I carried them into secondary school, where I lacked confidence and spent years doubting myself. And also to the other side of the world.

It’s one of the reasons I feel so strongly that children deserve more than an education.

Children might not remember every lesson they were taught.

But they’ll often remember how the adults around them made them feel.

They deserve to know they never have to make themselves smaller just to belong.

This is one of the reasons Sarah & Sophia 💗 Calm Crafts | Sensory & Fidgets means so much to me.

Being yourself is the ultimate freedom.

Some stories take years to find the words for.

With Conall about to start Junior Infants, I’ve found myself thinking about my own first days at school.

I remember being hit over the head with a Bible.

I remember being dragged by my ear and made to stand facing the corner of the classroom.

I don’t even remember what I’d done. I just remember feeling scared.

Years later, I heard that the teacher had once said, “There are special schools for children like Sarah.”

For so long, I believed I just needed to try harder, be quieter, don’t be bold or cause any trouble.

I wonder how different things might have been if someone had understood me instead of trying to change me.

Watching Sophia create, laugh, edit videos, make bracelets and dream up ideas is why Calm Crafts exists.

It’s not really been about selling sensory tools.

It’s about helping children feel safe.

Helping them feel understood.

Helping them know they don’t have to shrink themselves to belong.

Perhaps that’s become my mission now.

To help Sophia shine.

To support others to shine.

I’m giving little Sarah permission to shine too.

If even one child feels a little safer, or one parent feels a little less alone because of what we share here, then every part of this journey has been worth it.

Thank you for being here.
