🌊 Everyone’s talking about smart flood solutions—so why aren’t we seeing them on the ground?
-
šŸ“ˆ Barbados qualifies for serious climate resilience funding—from the Green Climate Fund, UNDP, CDB and others. The tech exists. The threat is growing. But progress keeps stalling.
-
Here’s why:
•
— Proposals get trapped in red tape
•
— Ministries aren’t always aware of what’s available
•
— And knowing tech exists isn’t the same as pushing to use it
•
Plus, budgets are fragmented, there’s no clear agency leading the charge, and without a pilot project, it’s hard to prove anything works.
~
But here’s the thing—this is how most cities start:
~
A low-cost pilot in just 1–2 flood hotspots could prove:

— Real community benefit

— Data accuracy

— Local maintenance is possible
~

That’s how you build momentum. Not by rolling out a full system from day one—but by showing value in one place.

🌊 Kiribati & Rising Seas: A Nation on the Frontlines 🌊

The low-lying islands of Kiribati are facing an existential threat as sea levels continue to rise. With coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, and frequent flooding, the future of this Pacific nation is at risk.

To combat the crisis, Kiribati has implemented measures like:
āœ… Land acquisition – Buying land in Fiji as a potential future home.
āœ… Climate-resilient infrastructure – Building seawalls and elevating homes.
āœ… Mangrove restoration – Planting mangroves to protect coastlines.
āœ… International advocacy – Pushing for global climate action.

Kiribati is fighting to stay above water—will the world listen? šŸŒšŸ’™

ā€¢šŸŒŠ Kiribati & Barbados: Rising Seas 🌊

Both Kiribati and Barbados are on the frontlines of sea level rise, facing coastal erosion, saltwater intrusion, and stronger storms. While Kiribati battles disappearing land in the Pacific, Barbados faces similar struggles in the Caribbean.

šŸ”¹ Kiribati’s Response: Land purchase in Fiji, seawalls, and mangrove restoration.
šŸ”¹ Barbados’ Response: Climate-resilient housing, coral reef restoration, and global climate advocacy.

šŸ’ØBarbados, known for its pristine beaches and lush landscapes, is facing increasing challenges with air pollution.
šŸœļø One of the key contributors is the dust from the Sahara Desert, which often makes its way across the Atlantic, impacting air quality during the dry season.

•Local factors also play a role, such as vehicle emissions and industrial activities, which contribute to higher levels of particulate matter and ground-level ozone. These pollutants not only affect the environment but also pose health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly and children, who may experience respiratory problems and other health issues. šŸŒ¬ļø

šŸš«šŸ’°Jeff Bezos’s $10bn philanthropic fund has stopped backing the world’s leading voluntary climate standard setter, following rising scrutiny over its influence on the body, in a move seen as the billionaire’s latest effort to curry favour with US President Donald Trump. According to three people familiar with the decision, the Bezos Earth Fund has ended its support for the Science Based Targets initiative, a globally renowned body that holds sway over how companies such as Apple and H&M can achieve a credible ā€œnet zeroā€ label. šŸ·ļø

From his first term to now, Trump has been a staunch opponent of the green movement, and this time is no different. His push for a fossil-fueled future seems more likely to speed up climate change than to slow it down.

•Via: World Resources Institute: Some of the major setbacks we can expect include massive cuts to climate-focused agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of the Interior, with climate-hostile directors at the helm; expanding oil and gas production and limiting clean energy development; rescinding billions in unspent funds from the Inflation Reduction Act and reallocating them toward high-carbon activities; and dismantling environmental justice initiatives. Internationally, the U.S. is expected to pull out of the Paris Agreement on climate change and reduce climate finance assistance to vulnerable nations.

•Via: APNEWS: Trump’s action, hours after he was sworn in to a second term, echoed his directive in 2017, when he announced that the U.S. would abandon the global Paris accord. The pact is aimed at limiting long-term global warming šŸŒ”ļø
Trump’s order says the Paris accord is among a number of international agreements that don’t reflect U.S. values and ā€œsteer American taxpayer dollars to countries that do not require, or merit, financial assistance in the interests of the American people.ā€

In addition: Trump has also decided to cut funding to the The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)šŸš«šŸ’µ
-The loss of funding from FEMA could be catastrophic in terms of planning for extreme weather. FEMA supports a number of grants specifically focused on emergency preparedness. FEMA also assists in recovery; in 2022, for example, in the wake of Hurricane Ida, FEMA sent affected Pennsylvania homeowners and renters more than $100 million.

Local Streets Become Unofficial Water Featuresā€

•This year, Barbados has seen more frequent flooding, causing disruptions across the island. One of the main factors? The drainage systems, which are struggling to cope with the increased rainfall. šŸ˜ļø

•As floods become more common, there’s a growing need for improvements to these systems to better handle the rainfall and reduce the impact on communities. Let’s hope the conversation around better infrastructure gets the attention it deserves.šŸ’§

•Encouraging rainwater harvesting, especially in urban areas, helps reduce the pressure on the drainage system. Various government and private initiatives have promoted rainwater harvesting technologies to store excess water and use it for non-potable purposes, thus easing the burden on stormwater drainage systems during periods of heavy rain šŸŒ§ļø

•Barbados' coastal and riverbank erosion issues can also exacerbate flooding, especially in areas close to the coastline. The destruction of natural barriers, like mangroves and wetlands, which help absorb rainwater, means that water is more likely to flow over land instead of being absorbed or filtered.

I can see how it’s easy to think that with climate media a lot of the information out there just seems like numbers and charts and whole lot of news that doesn’t necessarily seem to impact you as an individual, but that to me is the biggest mistake we all make🚫
•The moment you realize how interconnected everything is, you soon put the pieces together and notice how the next Hurricane, Tornado, Drought, Landslide, Earthquake etc is as a result of what is happening in the world right now.
•A lot of the these ā€œGreen Solutionsā€ aren’t making the impact the media would have us believe, so please, have a like this post, educate yourself, if at the very least share this on your pageāœ…
