The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son (Butterfield Group) has agreed to acquire CIBC's 91.7% stake in CIBC Caribbean in a transaction valued at US$1.794 billion, creating a regional banking and wealth management platform with approximately US$29 billion in assets.
Of particular significance for Barbados, Butterfield has confirmed that CIBC Caribbean’s regional headquarters will remain in Barbados, while clients are expected to benefit from enhanced cross-border banking capabilities, expanded wealth management and corporate services, and continued investment in digital banking technology.
The deal, which is expected to close in the first half of 2027 subject to regulatory approvals, will also see Butterfield pursue stock listings on the Barbados Stock Exchange, alongside other Caribbean exchanges.
This landmark transaction has major implications for the future of regional banking, financial services integration, capital markets, and Barbados’ position as a Caribbean financial hub.
