Understanding and Managing WordPress Image Sizes

Indeed, on one image upload, WordPress generates many other image sizes that do appear to be too much but serve one great purpose: to provide the best size image for each user's device. This article will explore the logic of creating WordPress image sizes, their importance, how to stop these sizes from being generated, and how image optimization will boost site performance.

1. What Are WordPress Image Sizes?

Upon upload, WordPress creates some default image size parameters:

Thumbnail: Used for featured images, galleries, and product listings.
Medium: Used for images in blog posts that do not require full resolution.
Large: Used for big photos or hero headers.
Full (Original): the original uploaded file, preserved for reference or for large displays.
Themes and plugins can also register additional custom image sizes (for example, special dimensions for extra-wide hero sliders, specific product image dimensions). All these versions stay your server.

2. Why Different Image Sizes Are Necessary

These defaults all serve a purpose:

Performance: The smaller an image file, the faster it loads. Thus, improving user experience and SEO.
Consistency: The same size throughout provides for a more polished look within elements like blog rolls and image galleries.
Responsive Design: Devices of differing resolutions require images of differing sizes. Smaller works great on mobile; larger fills that desktop.
WordPress image sizes help developers serve the right image to every device without resizing the images manually.

3. Preventing Generation of Unwanted WordPress Image Sizes

By disabling superfluous image sizes, you save space and reduce the burden your site inflicts on the upload of images.

Option 1: Update Settings in WordPress

In your dashboard, go to Settings > Media.
Set the values for "Thumbnail size," "Medium size," and "Large size" to 0 to disable these sizes.
Option 2: Modify functions.php in Your Theme

To remove custom image sizes registered by a theme or plugin, include this code:

PHP

function remove_unwanted_image_sizes() {
remove_image_size('custom-size-name'); // Replace with the actual size slug
}
add_action('init', 'remove_unwanted_image_sizes');
Important: Disabling sizes only stops WordPress from generating them for new uploads; existing images will still have the old versions stored. You can either manually delete the unnecessary image files or use a cleanup plugin to bulk delete them.

4. The Functionality of an Image Optimizer Over Multiple Sizes

An image optimizer compresses all created image sizes (thumb, medium, large, custom) so that all available sizes are minimized in an efficient manner: fast page load, less bandwidth usage, and a good experience. Mostly, any form of image optimizer works secretly, optimizing all sizes when you add a new image.

5. Controlling Image Compression

Most of the time, image optimizers allow you to select which image sizes to compress. This grants you even more control regarding your optimization strategy. These settings are usually found in the configuration area of the plugin.

Why Image Optimization Is Important

Images are the visual pulse of your WordPress website, adding aesthetic appeal and storytelling richness. However, these seemingly harmless images can unknowingly contribute to slower load times and worse performance. The primary offender? Image size. Large images are a cause of slow loading, which we'll discuss in more depth in a bit.

It is important to identify the reason behind slow-loading sites. That is where speed tests are useful, to reveal the intricacies of your site's slowdown.

Larger images may appear good, but they are bound to cause slower loading.

10 Essential Rules for Creating a Responsive Website with Elementor

In today's mobile world, a responsive website is a must. With over 60% of traffic coming from mobile devices, a poor mobile experience will cost you customers. Elementor simplifies responsive design with its powerful tools. In this article, we'll go over 10 essential rules for creating a fully responsive website with Elementor.

1. Mobile-First Design
Design mobile layouts first. Start with small screens and work your way up to big screens. This is simpler to do and prioritizes key content. In Elementor, enable the responsive mode switcher to toggle to mobile view and design from there.

Why Mobile-First? It provides an excellent user experience on all devices by prioritizing the essentials. It is simpler to expand a mobile design to larger screens than to condense a desktop design.

2. Take Advantage of Elementor's Responsive Kits

Elementor provides pre-designed responsive kits and templates coded for different screen sizes. They are a great starting point and a time-saver on design.

Advantages: Pre-designed for optimal performance on all devices, they give a professional appearance and yet can be personalized.

3. Use Breakpoints to Customize

Breakpoints determine the way your layout responds to various screen widths. Elementor does have default breakpoints for desktop, tablet, and mobile. Custom breakpoints are already supported by Elementor Pro for more defined control. Find them in "Site Settings" -> "Layout" -> "Breakpoints."

Advantages of Additional Breakpoints: Customize the layouts for certain devices and orientations, and dictate the way each unit responds.

4. Fluid Units for Adaptability

Use fluid units like percentages (%), viewport height/width (vh/vw), em, and rem instead of fixed pixels for greater flexibility.

Common Unit Options:

%: Flexible widths (e.g., a container taking up 90% of the viewport).

vh/vw: Full-screen elements (e.g., hero sections).

em/rem: Scalable text sizes relative to parent or root element.

5. Utilize Scalable Typography

Use relative units (em or rem) for font size, line height, and spacing in Elementor typography settings.

Define a default font size in global settings for consistency.

This provides readability on any device.

6. Optimize Images for Devices

Optimize images for faster load times, particularly on mobile. Elementor's Image Optimizer plugin automatically converts images to WebP and AVIF formats. Device-specific custom background images can also be set within the Elementor editor.

Why Optimize Images? Smaller file sizes enhance site speed and SEO.

Device-Specific Background Images: Employ different images or crop sizes for desktop, tablet, and mobile to deliver visual appeal and functionality.

7. Create Tap-Friendly Interactive Elements

Interactive elements such as buttons and links should be highly tappable, particularly on mobile. Use a minimum 44x44 pixel touch target size. Use button padding and the "Floating Button" widget of Elementor for effortless tapping on mobile.

8. Conceal Needless Elements on Mobile

Use Elementor's "Show/Hide" option (in the "Advanced" tab of any widget or section) to manage what to display on which devices. This simplifies mobile layouts without impacting desktop experience.

9. Use Motion Effects Judiciously

Use motion effects judiciously on mobile to prevent overwhelming the user and slowing load times. Manage motion effects for each device separately in Elementor's "Advanced" settings -> "Motion Effects."

10. Minimize Load Times Using Lazy Loading

Activate lazy loading of videos and images in Elementor's performance settings. It postpones loading until assets are required, speeding up site and user experience.

Start Building Your Responsive Site Today!

Elementor has all the features you require to build a responsive site, ranging from pre-designed kits and flexible breakpoints to image optimization and lazy loading. Using these 10 principles, you will be able to provide users with a seamless and engaging experience on any device.

Considering creating a personal website? Good job! It's an excellent choice that provides you with complete control over your online presence.

A personal website lets you stake your claim on the Internet—a site where you're in charge, you're in control of the design, and you write what you please about yourself. Sound appealing? If so, this book will take you through all you need to get started. We'll talk about why you might want a personal website, the various types you can make, and step-by-step directions on creating one using WordPress.

What Is a Personal Website?
- A personal website is exactly what it sounds like—a site that accurately portrays who you are and what you do. Unlike social media, where the sites make the rules, your site is yours alone to create, mold, and control.

Why Build a Personal Website?
- Others rely on social media to make their mark online. Handy as it might be, social sites come with risks—algorithmic changes, account suspensions, or a change in ownership can erase all you've built.

With a personal website, you have ownership over your content and can:
- Design the site to reflect your personality or brand
- Post long-form content without limits
- Sell products or services
- Showcase your portfolio
- Gain more visibility through search engines
- Have all your online profiles in a single location

Types of Personal Websites
A personal website has numerous uses, such as:
- About Me Website – A simple online resume or virtual business card
- Blog – Share knowledge and gain an audience
- Newsletter – Share and connect with your audience through frequent newsletters
- Portfolio – Display your projects as a designer, artist, or developer
Whichever you select, WordPress simplifies the process of customizing your website to your precise requirements.

Step-by-Step Process to Building Your Personal Website
1. Select a Hosting Plan
Hosting is where your website files are stored. WordPress.com offers managed hosting, so setup, security, and performance are handled for you. Their plans go from Personal to Commerce, based on what you require.

2. Choose a Domain Name
Your domain is your website address (e.g., yourname.com). Choose an easy-to-remember, professional name that reflects your brand. A free domain for a year comes with most WordPress.com plans.

3. Choose a Theme
Themes control the appearance of your website. WordPress offers free and premium themes based on the type of website you're running. You can find and install a theme from within the WordPress admin area.

4. Create and Customize Your Homepage
Create a new page through Pages > Add New
Utilize WordPress' block editor to add text, images, and buttons
Choose from available templates to use an existing layout or create your own
Assign the page as homepage through Settings > Reading

5. Include Must-Have Pages and a Menu
Must-have pages are:
About – Tell visitors about yourself
Contact – Allow visitors to get in touch with you
Portfolio – Display your work
Blog (optional) – Publish insights and news
To structure navigation, visit Appearance > Editor and modify the menu.

6. Personalize Fonts and Colors
Utilize the Styles menu in the Site Editor to:
Modify typography for headings and body text
Tweak color schemes for backgrounds and buttons
Implement design adjustments site-wide

7. Edit Page Templates
Templates dictate the design of single content types (e.g., blog posts, pages). Edit them under Templates in the Site Editor for consistency.

8. Install Plugins (For Business & Commerce Plans)
Plugins enhance your site's functionality, enabling you to:
Improve SEO
Add contact forms
Connect social media feeds
Monitor analytics
Install plugins via the Plugins menu and click to activate them.
Start Building Your Online Presence

A personal site provides you with autonomy, versatility, and a professional online presence. Through these steps, you can have a beautiful site that represents you just the way you want. Ready to begin? Join WordPress.com today!
