ডায়ালাইসিস চলাকালে রোগীর শরীর থেকে রক্ত বের করে লাল টিউবের মাধ্যমে ডায়ালাইসিস মেশিনে পাঠানো হয়, সেখান থেকে পরিশোধিত রক্ত আবার নীল টিউব দিয়ে শরীরে ফিরিয়ে দেওয়া হয়।

এই প্রক্রিয়া চলতে থাকে টানা চার ঘণ্টা, রোগীকে শুয়ে থাকতে হয় একটানা, নড়াচড়া ছাড়া।

একজন ডায়ালাইসিস রোগীকে সপ্তাহে তিনবার এ প্রক্রিয়ার মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়—

মাসে ১২ বার, মোট ৪৮ ঘণ্টা যন্ত্রের ওপর নির্ভরশীল জীবন।

অন্যদিকে, যারা সুস্থ—তাদের কিডনি এই কাজটি করে ফেলে দিনে ৩৬ বার,

না কোনো যন্ত্রের সাহায্য, না কোনো কষ্ট, না কোনো সময়ক্ষেপন।
