Khatunganj, one of the oldest and most important wholesale markets in Bangladesh, has long been a centre for trading spices, garments, and hardware. Located in Chattogram, near the Karnaphuli River, Chaktai Canal, and the Chattogram Port, this market has thrived for generations thanks to its strategic location. But over time, unplanned urban growth, traffic congestion, broken canal systems, and unsafe, narrow roads have made it harder for businesses and people to operate smoothly. These problems not only slow down trade but also take away from the rich heritage that makes Khatunganj unique.

In Dhaka, where concrete density leaves little room to exhale, rises a structure that quite literally
breathes, not just for itself, but for the city that surrounds it. Brac University’s new campus, sited
on an urban area in Merul Badda, is more than just a place of higher learning. It is a symbol of
how architecture, when rooted in empathy and foresight, can nurture both people and the
planet.

In the heart of Dhaka, a quiet architectural transformation has taken place—one that balances urgency with calm, efficiency with reflection, and structure with growth. Designed by Mahmudul Gani Kanak, Principal Architect of CHINTA, along with his team, including Ahsan Habib, the office interior for a now-prominent e-commerce headquarters tells a layered story of brand emergence, spatial dialogue, and adaptive reuse.

Mohammad Eunus, a distinguished Bangladeshi artist and educator, has carved a unique path through the intricate terrain of contemporary abstraction. A pioneer in his own right, Eunus is best known for his emotionally resonant, textured canvases that transcend traditional form and realism. The work of Mohammad Eunus emerges as a profound, contemplative voice—one that speaks not through loud gestures, but through the quiet power of color, form, and emotional depth.

The June issue-111 of Showcase Magazine is here.

This issue presents the 13-storey campus of BRAC University, designed by Singapore-based firm WOHA. Defined by a hybrid architectural language and equipped with urban-scale amenities, the project challenges conventional ideas of academic space—its form evoking more of a commercial complex than a traditional institution.

Also featured are the expressive works of Mohammad Eunus, where bold colours, textured layers, and distorted forms give shape to the complexities of the human psyche. In contrast, the practice of emerging artist Lutfa Mahmuda is marked by variation—ranging from semi-realistic urban scenes to mythic and abstract compositions—yet to arrive at a cohesive visual identity.

The issue also highlights “Fakir Bari,” a stilted rural villa with intriguing spatial decisions and a tension between vertical accents and domestic scale. A student thesis from BUET envisions a revitalised Khatunganj, proposing a more inclusive and open public realm within the city’s historic wholesale trade district.

After selecting a tranquil spot in Gulshan-1 Rivendell by Gotcha opened its door at the beginning of December 2022. Maliha Ahmed, the principal architect of Minus Designs, tried to create an oasis in the middle of the city, surrounded by beautiful, vibrant green. The overall creation ensures peace and calmness throughout the day where guests can take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, enjoying their lovely signature drinks, especially; the strawberry cheese affair and mango cheese affair.
