Editorial:
The widespread sale and use of wireless communication devices, commonly known as walkie-talkies, without adequate regulatory oversight has emerged as a growing concern in Bangladesh, raising questions about privacy, frequency management, and national security.
In recent years, law enforcement agencies have occasionally uncovered unauthorized wireless communication networks allegedly operated by influential individuals and criminal syndicates in violation of existing telecommunications regulations. Experts warn that the increasing availability of such devices through online platforms may further complicate regulatory enforcement.
# # Online Market Flooded with Inexpensive Devices
Over the past two years, a noticeable rise has been observed in the online sale of walkie-talkie sets through pages, e-commerce platforms, and social media marketplaces. Among the most commonly advertised models is the **BF-888S**, which is being sold at prices ranging from Tk 1,100 to Tk 1,800, depending on the seller.
Sellers frequently market these devices for use at small events, residential buildings, private security services, and internal communications. However, inquiries at the field level suggest that many vendors possess limited knowledge regarding the technical specifications, licensing requirements, or legal framework governing the operation of wireless communication equipment.
# # Privacy and Frequency Interference Risks
Radio spectrum is a limited and carefully managed national resource worldwide. Telecommunications specialists note that uncontrolled use of radio devices may create several operational and security challenges.
One of the primary concerns is the potential breach of privacy. If multiple organizations, residential complexes, or security teams operate on identical or overlapping frequencies within the same geographical area, conversations intended to remain confidential could potentially be intercepted by other nearby users.
Another concern involves communication congestion. Since walkie-talkie systems generally allow only one transmission at a time on a given channel, prolonged or intentional occupation of a channel could disrupt communications for other users sharing the same frequency. In emergency situations, such interference could have serious consequences.
# # Lack of User Registration Raises Security Questions
Internationally, the use of radio communication equipment is generally subject to regulatory oversight by national telecommunications authorities. Industry experts argue that maintaining accurate records of users and ensuring compliance with spectrum regulations are essential for preventing misuse.
At present, there is little publicly available information regarding the number of such devices currently in use in Bangladesh or whether their users are properly registered with the relevant authorities. Analysts warn that if unregulated communication devices fall into the hands of criminal groups, monitoring their activities and managing spectrum interference could become increasingly difficult for law enforcement agencies.
Experts have therefore called for greater awareness among consumers, stronger regulatory oversight, and appropriate measures by the relevant authorities, including the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC), to ensure the safe and lawful use of wireless communication equipment.
