This is a bronze statue of Maria Skłodowska-Curie (Marie Curie), the Polish-born physicist and chemist, located in Warsaw’s New Town (Nowe Miasto) district in the Downtown area.

She is shown standing and holding aloft a stylized model of the polonium atom (the element she and her husband Pierre discovered in 1898 and named after her native Poland): a central sphere with orbiting rings, set inside a square frame. The figure wears an oversized laboratory apron stylized as a dress and stands about 1.9 m (6 ft 3 in) tall on a small pedestal inscribed “Maria Skłodowska-Curie.”

The monument was designed by Polish sculptor Bronisław Krzysztof and financed by the Association of the Legion of Honour Members. It was unveiled on 4 June 2014 by Polish President Bronisław Komorowski and French President François Hollande; attendees included Warsaw’s mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz and Science Minister Lena Kolarska-Bobińska. The site was chosen near the intersection of Kościelna and Piesza Streets, in front of the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, close to the tenement at 16 Freta Street where Curie was born in 1867, and overlooking the Vistula River—places associated with her early life.

The statue honors Curie’s pioneering work on radioactivity (for which she shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and won the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry alone), her status as the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win twice, and the enduring Franco-Polish scientific and cultural ties. It is one of several monuments to her in Warsaw and elsewhere in Poland.
