In 1925 the Pahlavi dynasty of Iran was very focused on westernizing Iran and women were part of this project. In this era many laws were established which granted women equal rights. Islamic Revolution that took place in Iran in 1978–79 resulted in the toppling of the monarchy and led to the establishment of an Islamic republic. Women in huge numbers also participated in this at that time. Since the Islamic Revolution women's rights have been restricted, and several laws were established such as the introduction of mandatory veiling and a public dress code for women. In September 2022, a 22-year-old Iranian woman named Mahsa Amini died in a hospital after her arrest by the morality police for not wearing the hijab in accordance with government standards. Since then, women in Iran have been protesting against it and demanding freedom from the sharia laws of the state.
