We are truly honored to welcome Professor Dr. Alasdair Alex Cook — the pioneer whose vision helped shape CVASU’s global standing in veterinary education, research, and One Health collaboration.

From leading the 1990s partnership between CVASU (then CGVC) and the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), UK, to inspiring the Avian Influenza Research Project (2014–2024), Professor Cook’s contributions transformed veterinary education and research in Bangladesh.

Now, as an Esteemed Emeritus Professor, he returns to deliver a keynote at the 17th International Scientific Conference (Oct 26–28, 2025) on “Interdisciplinary Integration of Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems for Health, Food Safety, and Nutrition.”

His journey with CVASU is not just history — it’s a legacy of vision, collaboration, and impact. 💫

🦠🇧🇩 ফিরে এসেছে অ্যানথ্রাক্স: আতঙ্ক নয়, প্রতিরোধই হোক প্রথম পদক্ষেপ — সচেতন হোন, নিরাপদ থাকুন 🩺

সম্প্রতি বাংলাদেশের রংপুরের পীরগাছা, মিঠাপুকুর ও কাউনিয়ায় অ্যানথ্রাক্সে আক্রান্ত ব্যক্তিদের শনাক্ত হওয়ার পর আবারও নতুনকরে সামনে এসেছে প্রাণিজ উৎস থেকে মানবদেহে ছড়ানো মারণঘাতি রোগ অ্যানথ্রাক্স। গত কয়েক মাসে দেশের উত্তরাঞ্চলে প্রায় শতাধিক গবাদিপশু মারা গেছে,সেই সাথে আক্রান্ত পশুর মাংস ও রক্তের সংস্পর্শে এসে আক্রান্ত মানুষের সংখ্যাও দিনদিন বাড়ছে।

🔍অ্যানথ্রাক্স কি ?
এটি একটি জুনোটিক রোগ অর্থাৎ এটি এমন একটি রোগ যা প্রাণী থেকে মানুষে ছড়াতে পারে এবং উভয়কেই আক্রান্ত করতে পারে।

🔬 অ্যানথ্রাক্স কীভাবে ছড়ায়?
অ্যানথ্রাক্স হলো Bacillus anthracis নামক এক স্পোর গঠনকারী (spore forming) ব্যাকটেরিয়ার সংক্রমণ।
এই স্পোরগুলো মাটি, চামড়া, পশুর মৃতদেহ কিংবা পশুজাত পণ্যে (যেমন মাংসে) দীর্ঘদিন টিকে থাকতে পারে।
সংক্রমণ সাধারণত তিনভাবে হতে পারে -
1️⃣ ত্বকের মাধ্যমে (Cutaneous anthrax): কাটা বা ঘায়ের সংস্পর্শে জীবাণু প্রবেশ করে ত্বকে কালচে ক্ষত তৈরি করে।
2️⃣ খাবারের মাধ্যমে (Gastrointestinal anthrax): আক্রান্ত পশুর মাংস খেলে দেখা দেয় মারাত্মক পেটব্যথা, ডায়রিয়া, রক্তবমি।
3️⃣ শ্বাসের মাধ্যমে (Pulmonary anthrax): বাতাসে ভেসে থাকা স্পোর ফুসফুসে গেলে দেখা দিতে পারে প্রাণঘাতী সংক্রমণ।

⚠️ ঝুঁকি কোথায় বেশি?
- অসুস্থ পশু জবাই, মাংস বিক্রি ও সংরক্ষনের সময়
- অসচেতনতাবশত আক্রান্ত পশুর মৃতদেহ কাটাছেঁড়া করলে
- পশুর হাড়, পশম, চামড়া বা রক্তের সংস্পর্শে
- পশুর খাবার দূষিত থাকলে কিংবা অপরিষ্কার কসাইখানায়

💉 প্রতিরোধই একমাত্র কার্যকর পথ:
✅ অসুস্থ পশু জবাই বা বিক্রি করা যাবে না।
✅ মৃত পশুর দেহ নিরাপদে পুড়িয়ে বা মাটি চাপা দিতে হবে (কারণ অক্সিজেন পেলে স্পোর টিকে থাকে)।
✅ সুস্থ পশুকে নিয়মিত অ্যানথ্রাক্স টিকা দিতে হবে।
✅ মাংস ও দুধ ভালোভাবে রান্না ছাড়া গ্রহণ করা যাবে না।
✅ আক্রান্ত এলাকা কোয়ারেন্টিনে রাখতে হবে এবং স্থানটি জীবাণুমুক্ত করতে হবে।
✅ চিকিৎসকের পরামর্শে সঠিক অ্যান্টিবায়োটিক ব্যবহারেই রোগ সম্পূর্ণ সেরে যায়।

🌍🐾 World Rabies Day 2025 – Free Rabies Vaccination & Awareness Campaign 🐾🌍

📅 September 29, 2025

As part of this year’s World Rabies Day celebration, the One Health Institute (CVASU), in collaboration with One Health Institute Communication Cell (OHICC), One Health Young Voice, Bangladesh (OHYV,B), and Youth Club of Bangladesh (YCB), successfully organized a Free Rabies Vaccination & Awareness Campaign at the Halishahar BDR field area near Halishahar Cantonment Public School & College.

✅ Campaign Highlights:

- 54 cats and 1 dog vaccinated against rabies

- 21 cats received free anthelmintics

- Distribution of Rabies & Thalassemia awareness leaflets

- 224 people reached through awareness sessions

- Over 120+ pet owners contacted us for the next vaccination opportunity

The program ran from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with the support of 16 dedicated volunteers from One Health Young Voice, Bangladesh and Youth Club of Bangladesh and 2 veterinary doctors, ensuring proper cold chain management and safety throughout.

This initiative was successfully conducted under the guidance and leadership of Professor Dr. Md. Ahasanul Hoque (Rukan), Honorable Director of the One Health Institute, CVASU, and with the tireless efforts of OHICC, OHYV,B, and YCB members.

✨ In line with this year’s World Rabies Day theme — “Act Now: You, Me, Community” — we are moving forward with determination to achieve Zero Rabies by 2030 in Bangladesh.

On the occasion of World Rabies Day 2025, Professor Md. Ahasanul Hoque, Director of the One Health Institute, CVASU, shared his reflections in today’s Dainik Purbokone.

He highlighted that:

Rabies remains a fatal but fully preventable disease.

Vaccination is the only proven and effective method of prevention.

Achieving a rabies-free Bangladesh requires awareness, responsibility, and collective commitment from all sectors of society.

The global theme for this year —
“Act now: You, Me, Community – Together for a Rabies-Free World” — strongly resonates with our national aspiration to eliminate rabies through coordinated efforts involving government, institutions, and communities.

🎓 Thesis Defense | One Health Institute, CVASU 🎓

The One Health Institute (OHI), CVASU proudly hosted the thesis defense of the 6th Batch of MPH students. The students are mostly from backgrounds such as medical, veterinary, and food sciences.

🌟 A total of 15 students presented their research, addressing impactful topics such as cataract surgery efficiency, prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Bangladesh, mental health awareness, zoonosis in pets, occupational health issues, slaughterhouse and meat hygiene, and more.

The defense session was chaired by Professor Md. Ahasanul Hoque, Director of the One Health Institute, CVASU, whose leadership and guidance ensured the smooth conduct of the program. We were further honored to have Prof. Dr. Mohiuddin Ahsanul Kabir Chowdhury, Chairman of the Department of Public Health, Asian University for Women (AUW), as the esteemed external examiner. His valuable insights and expertise greatly enriched the session. 👏

Each presentation reflected months of dedication, rigorous scientific inquiry, and close mentorship from our distinguished faculty. 🌿✨
