1 May 2018—the day of Shab-e-Barat. Tasfia Amin, a ninth-grader at Chittagong's Sunshine Grammar School, went out to meet her boyfriend, Adnan Mirza, another ninth-grader from Bangladesh Elementary School.
The two visited China Grill Restaurant at Probortok Circle and ordered ice cream. Strangely, they never ate it. CCTV footage showed them spending around 18 minutes inside the restaurant before paying the bill and leaving.
Afterwards, Tasfia and Adnan boarded separate CNG autorickshaws and headed in completely opposite directions. What makes this even more puzzling is that Tasfia's home on O.R. Nizam Road was only about a five-minute walk from Probortok Circle. That evening, she had reportedly been given only 100 taka for transportation. She didn't even need a CNG to get home.
But Tasfia never returned.
Around 9:00 PM, her worried family contacted Adnan to inform him that she was unreachable. Adnan immediately went to Tasfia's house. He then contacted someone named Firoz, who also arrived and assured the family that they would search for Tasfia and bring her home within two hours.
She was never found that night.
The following day, Tasfia's body was recovered on a concrete block along the shoreline in the Naval area of Patenga—nearly 18 kilometres from her home. There were visible injuries on her forehead and knees, while her face appeared bruised.
The mystery only deepened.
How did she end up in Patenga when she reportedly didn't have enough money to travel that far?
Even more intriguingly, CCTV footage from the restaurant showed Tasfia wearing a salwar kameez. However, when her body was recovered the following day, she was wearing an entirely different outfit—a top and a skirt!
Tasfia's father, Mohammad Amin, later filed a case against Adnan Mirza and several others, alleging that the entire incident had been carefully planned.
According to the family, Tasfia and Adnan had met through Facebook and later became involved in a relationship—something her father strongly opposed. After discovering the relationship, he reportedly called Adnan to their home, warned him to stay away from his daughter, and even removed the SIM card from Tasfia's iPhone to prevent further communication. Despite that, the two allegedly continued communicating through social media using the family's Wi-Fi connection. Tasfia's father later claimed that Adnan had invited her out on 1 May to celebrate one month of their relationship, alleging that the meeting itself was part of a larger plan.
Adnan was arrested soon afterwards but denied all the allegations. He maintained that after leaving the restaurant, the two took separate CNGs and that he had no further contact with Tasfia. Police later considered this explanation plausible because Tasfia's phone no longer had an active SIM card. However, her iPhone was never recovered, making it impossible to determine who, if anyone, had contacted her after she left the restaurant.
Yet one possible angle continues to raise questions. The duty of investigators is to examine every reasonable possibility before reaching a conclusion. One of the biggest mysteries remains Tasfia's change of clothes. Equally puzzling is the disappearance of both her iPhone and the ring she was reportedly wearing.
This raises another question: Was Tasfia's house ever searched?
Reports suggest that someone at home somehow learned Tasfia was out with Adnan on the day of the incident. According to this account, another person contacted Adnan and asked him to send Tasfia home immediately. Could that explain why the pair left the restaurant without even touching the ice cream they had ordered? CCTV footage later showed them travelling in different directions.
That naturally leads to another question.
If this was indeed the result of a criminal act, was every possible angle explored—including the possibility of family involvement?
Tasfia reportedly continued communicating with Adnan despite her father's objections. For that reason alone, the possibility of a so-called honour-related incident could arguably have been examined as one line of inquiry. Was it ever?
There is little doubt that Tasfia and Adnan were in a relationship. However, no clear evidence has ever emerged suggesting a serious conflict between them. According to available accounts, Adnan spent hours searching for Tasfia alongside her family until around midnight that very night. If he was responsible, his participation in the search seems unusual. Of course, that too could simply have been part of a carefully planned attempt to avoid suspicion.
Another possibility is that Tasfia returned home after leaving the restaurant. Since her home was only a short walk away, she didn't actually need a CNG. If she did return home, changed her clothes, and an argument later developed over her continued communication with Adnan, was that possibility ever thoroughly examined?
Publicly available information suggests it was not.
The case was investigated repeatedly over eight years by several law enforcement agencies, including CID, DB and PBI. Each investigation reached a similar conclusion: that Tasfia's death resulted from drowning, with no confirmed evidence of physical assault, poisoning or alcohol involvement. Each time, Tasfia's family challenged those findings in court, maintaining that their daughter had no reason to take such a step.
The legal process continued until 2026. Interestingly, after the fifth and final investigation report was submitted on 11 June 2026, Tasfia's family did not challenge the findings. The High Court later ordered the investigation to be concluded, and those accused were cleared.
Yet several questions remain unanswered.
Despite years of investigation, no team publicly identified the CNG driver who reportedly transported Tasfia that evening. No publicly available information suggests that CCTV footage from the area around her home was recovered to determine whether she returned there after leaving the restaurant. Likewise, it remains unclear whether investigators formally considered the possibility of an honour-related incident as part of the investigation.
For many observers, those unanswered questions continue to stand out. Some reports also suggested that Tasfia had been struggling academically, a point reportedly confirmed by her school's headmistress, and that she was under considerable family pressure.
On the other hand, another possibility is that someone else may have orchestrated the entire incident. The CCTV footage showing Tasfia and Adnan travelling in opposite directions, combined with Adnan's efforts to search for her that night, makes the timeline increasingly difficult to piece together.
There is also the possibility that neither Adnan nor Tasfia's family was involved at all. Perhaps the CNG driver, or someone else she encountered later that evening, played a role.
At this point, there simply isn't enough publicly available evidence to determine exactly what happened.
One question, however, continues to linger: Was every plausible investigative angle explored? If it was, the details have never been fully made public.
To this day, the final hours of Tasfia Amin remain one of Chittagong's most widely discussed and mysterious cases. With the investigation now officially concluded, the complete truth behind what happened that night may never be fully known.
