For astrobiologists, one of the most studied (and most radioresistant organisms) on Earth is the bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans. They're capable of surviving doses of radiation 500 times higher than humans and can live in environments that are extremely dry, cold, and acidic!

Lab experiments are used to explore if radioresistant organisms on Earth could survive on planets like Mars. These tests help determine 'how much radiation is too much' for life as we know it, which is a key question when trying to determine what makes a world habitable.
