South Korean President Condemns Torture of Migrant Workers as “Clear Human Rights Violation”

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has condemned the incident of a 30-year-old Sri Lankan migrant worker being tied to a forklift at a brick factory in Naju, South Korea, as a “clear violation of human rights” and pledged to better protect vulnerable workers.

“I couldn’t believe it when I saw the video with my own eyes,” the president wrote on his page. “In a country like South Korea, known around the world as a cultural powerhouse and a model of democracy, such an incident is unthinkable,” he said.

“This is a brutal act of violence against minorities and vulnerable people, which is completely unacceptable,” he added. “We will take strong action so that no one else is subjected to human rights violations or worker abuse because of their vulnerable position.”

The president has ordered relevant departments, including the Ministry of Employment and Labor, to take immediate action.
