Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project

Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project DRSP was officially requested by DMP to the Government of Japan and realized as first technical cooperation project together with JICA and DMP.

This technical cooperation project has three year periods which aims to strengthen DMP’s capacity to implement comprehensive road traffic safety measures in Dhaka Metropolitan Area. DRSP targets to three outputs, such as
1) Road safety education/ public relations,
2) Traffic accident report/ analysis and
3) Planning/ implementation of traffic safety & regulation and enforcement through pilot pr

ojects. JICA Experts affiliated with Oriental Consultants Global (OCG) Co., Ltd. and Katahira & Engineers International (KEI) has been dispatched to Bangladesh to support DMP officials. To implement project outputs properly DRSP works closely with the relevant organizations as Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC), Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The traffic safety education methods of the Japanese Traffic Police, introduced through the DRSP project, are now gaining traction in Dhaka. This initiative provides children with opportunities to learn safe pedestrian practices using models of crosswalks and traffic signals. By simulating real road conditions, children can gain hands-on experience with safe crossing methods and proper use of traffic signals, helping to foster practical traffic safety awareness.

13 officers from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) got advanced training in practical traffic systems, road safety, and accident data analysis in Japan. They held a debriefing session and discussed good practices of Japan that can be implemented in Dhaka.

JICA Expert Team (JET) introduced the road safety education programme for the students, called Practical and Participatory Education Program (PPEP). 
DRSP and three DMP officers trained as trainers have so far conducted a road safety education program called Practical and Participatory Education Program (PPEP) in three schools. There are plans to further expand this training program in the future.

In March 2022, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) launched the Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP) to strengthen the capacity of DMP towards implementing comprehensive road safety programmes in Dhaka. The project is a technical cooperation project supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
On 7th February, the Fourth Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) of DRSP was chaired by the Project Director of DRSP, Mr Md. Munibur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), DMP.
DMP traffic officials and JICA Expert Team (JET) presented the DRSP progress achieved in the last six months and the activity plans for the three project outputs.
