The traffic safety education methods of the Japanese Traffic Police, introduced through the DRSP project, are now gaining traction in Dhaka. This initiative provides children with opportunities to learn safe pedestrian practices using models of crosswalks and traffic signals. By simulating real road conditions, children can gain hands-on experience with safe crossing methods and proper use of traffic signals, helping to foster practical traffic safety awareness.

13 officers from the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) got advanced training in practical traffic systems, road safety, and accident data analysis in Japan. They held a debriefing session and discussed good practices of Japan that can be implemented in Dhaka.

JICA Expert Team (JET) introduced the road safety education programme for the students, called Practical and Participatory Education Program (PPEP).　
DRSP and three DMP officers trained as trainers have so far conducted a road safety education program called Practical and Participatory Education Program (PPEP) in three schools. There are plans to further expand this training program in the future.

In March 2022, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) launched the Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP) to strengthen the capacity of DMP towards implementing comprehensive road safety programmes in Dhaka. The project is a technical cooperation project supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
On 7th February, the Fourth Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) of DRSP was chaired by the Project Director of DRSP, Mr Md. Munibur Rahman, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), DMP.
DMP traffic officials and JICA Expert Team (JET) presented the DRSP progress achieved in the last six months and the activity plans for the three project outputs.

JICA collaborates with Sisimpur for encouraging road safety in Dhaka!
With JICA’s technical assistance “Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project” (DRSP), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Sesame Workshop
Bangladesh (SWB), the producer of Sisimpur, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 22nd Nov. The MoU aims mutual cooperation on awareness raising of young children about road safety and through various channels such as leaflets, storyboards, posters, Sisimpur videos, road signages, social network services, school education program, and road safety events.
DRSP’s purpose is strengthening DMP’s capacity to implement comprehensive road traffic safety measures in the Dhaka Metropolitan Area. JICA is thrilled about this innovative collaboration between DMP and SWB and is excited to see many outcomes soon!

DMP and SWB collaborates for the road safety of children
To raise the awareness of school children with appropriate road safety practice messages, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Sesame Workshop Bangladesh (SWB) are initiating a partnership. This initiative will be implemented under the ongoing 'Dhaka Road Traffic Safety Project (DRSP)', funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Notably, since March 2022, the DMP has been implementing the 3 years long DRSP as JICA cooperation project, with the main goal of enhancing its capacity to ensure comprehensive road safety in Dhaka.
SWB, an International Non-government Organization, producers of the children’s television series titled Sisimpur, and it is a popular program has proven to be an effective and meaningful medium to reach children with educational and entertaining content, bringing about positive changes.
To facilitate joint initiatives and activities aimed at enhancing road safety awareness and promoting responsible behavior among citizens, on 22 November 2023, Wednesday, DMP and SWB signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the DMP's office. The ceremony was attended by Md. Munibur Rahman, the Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of DMP and the Project Director of DRSP, and Mohammad Shah Alam, the Managing Director of SWB. Additionally, Yoshihisa Asada, Project Leader-DRSP, Kazi Romana Nasrin PPM, ADC of DMP, Abu Saif Ansari, Director-Programs and Business Development, SWB, Nasrin Akter, Director- Content and Creative Services, SWB and other representatives from JICA were also present.

As a part of initiatives, Sisimpur will collaborate to develop audio visual content suitable for children to encourage safe road crossing habits among students in Dhaka. Additionally, awareness building content will be disseminated through leaflets, road signages, and storyboards on road safety practices.
Based on the results of our initiatives, the activities might be scaled up in the future.
