Tarique Rahman,
A Humble Appeal to the Hon’ble Prime Minister,
Hon’ble MP Shaikh Rabiul Alam (Dhaka-10),
and Hon’ble MP Bobby Hajjaj (Dhaka-13).
I don’t know whether this post will ever reach you. I don’t know whether my words will make any difference.
But today, I am so frightened that I simply cannot remain silent.
As I write this, my hands are literally shaking.
We, the students, took to the streets. Many young lives were lost. Many families lost their sons, daughters, brothers and loved ones. We dreamed of a Bangladesh where people could live with dignity, freedom and security.
Today, you are in power. The responsibility of running this country is now in your hands.
But as an ordinary citizen, I have one question today:
Where is our security?
Today, I was sitting at a restaurant in Mohammadpur. On my way back, my rickshaw suddenly stopped in front of Mohammadpur Graveyard.
At first, I heard shouting from behind and assumed it was related to a procession or some political activity.
Then I saw dozens of young men running.
Some of them were carrying machetes and other sharp weapons.
And suddenly, I heard a loud sound.
Someone had apparently been struck with one of those weapons.
I was sitting inside the rickshaw.
For a few seconds, I genuinely thought the next attack could happen right there, inside the rickshaw.
I closed my eyes in fear.
When I opened them again, I saw multiple fresh slash marks on the body of the rickshaw.
Then another thought came to my mind—my phone was visible in my hand. I immediately hid it underneath my bag because I was afraid that someone might pull me out just to take it.
Tell me honestly—how many more days can we live with this kind of insecurity?
How are we supposed to live normal lives when stepping outside means wondering whether someone carrying a weapon might suddenly run toward us?
And sadly, this does not feel like an isolated incident.
I live in the Rayerbazar, Pathshalagoli area, and my office is also located there.
Just last week, around 10:45 PM, two of my female staff members left the salon together after work.
On their way home, around 8–10 men stopped them in the middle of the road. According to my staff, the men appeared to be under the influence of drugs.
They grabbed and pulled their bags, tried to take their phones, and even tore one of their bags.
They were two women simply trying to return home after finishing work.
Is it really too much to ask that women should be able to return home safely after work?
I am not writing this against any political party.
I am not trying to insult anyone.
I am simply speaking as a frightened citizen.
And honestly, today I found myself thinking again and again:
Maybe I should have never invested so much into this country. Maybe I should have simply gone abroad, settled somewhere else, and lived a life where I wouldn’t constantly be afraid of being attacked on the street.
But the truth is—
I love my country.
I want to stay here.
I want to build my business here.
I want to create jobs here.
I want to contribute here.
And most importantly, I want to feel safe here.
That is why I am requesting you with the utmost respect:
Please make the safety of ordinary citizens a priority.
Before massive development projects, before new investments, before everything else—
please make our streets safe.
We want development.
We want better roads.
We want investment.
We want a stronger economy.
But first, we want the basic right to return home alive.
We want women to be able to work late and return home without fear.
We want business owners and employees to be able to leave their workplaces without wondering whether they will be robbed or attacked.
We want our children to grow up in a country where carrying a machete on the street is not something people have to fear as part of everyday life.
Hon’ble Prime Minister,
Hon’ble Members of Parliament,
**You have been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting this country and its people.
Please protect us.**
Please take serious and visible action against street crime, drug-related violence, robbery and the open carrying of weapons.
Please make Mohammadpur, Rayerbazar and every other neighbourhood of Dhaka safe for ordinary people.
Today it was me.
Tomorrow it could be one of my staff members.
The day after, it could be someone else’s daughter, son, mother, father or brother.
We do not want another family to lose someone simply because they were trying to come home.
If any of my words are inappropriate or if I have unintentionally crossed any line, I sincerely ask you to forgive me.
But I don’t believe that asking for safety is wrong.
Asking for protection is not a political statement.
Asking to live without fear is not disrespect.
It is the basic right of every citizen.
I am not asking for anything extraordinary.
I am simply asking for a Bangladesh where an ordinary citizen can leave home, go to work, return at night—and not have to wonder:
“Will I make it home alive?”
Please give us back that sense of security.
Please let us live safely in our own country. 🇧🇩
